Abstract: Fibre- and film-forming polyesters are made by polycondensing a bis glycol ester of a dicarboxylic acid or an oligomer thereof, at least part of the polycondensation reaction being carried out while the reaction mixture in liquid state is caused to move along a long narrow tube in a state of turbanular flow by continuous concurrent movement past the liquid of an inert gaseous fluid, the rate of flow of the gaseous fluid being such as to ensure that during at least part of the residence time of the reaction mixture in the tube the partial pressure of glycol in the gaseous fluid is below the equilibrium partial pressure for the reaction mixture with which it is in contact. Suitable glycols are bis-1:4-hydroxymethylcyclohexane and those of formula HO.(CH2)n.OH where n is 2 to 10. Suitable dicarboxylic acids are terephthalic acid and bis-1:2-(p-carboxyphenoxy)ethane. Suitable gaseous fluids are nitrogen and trichlorofluoromethane. The gaseous fluid may contain a substance which reacts with carboxyl end groups, e.g. ethylene oxide or diazomethane. The reaction mixture may be fed to the tube in liquid form or dispersed in a suitable liquid. In the case where the gaseous liquid may be liquefied, the same liquid may be used as that in which the reactants are dispersed. The tube may be of uniform bore or the bore may increase progressively towards the outlet. The gaseous fluid may be injected at one point or more than one point. In examples, poly-(ethylene terephthalate) oligomers were fed to a tube the first stage of which was 15 metres long and 2.4 mms. internal diameter and the second stage of which was 7.5 metres long and 6.6 mms. internal diameter, the oligomers being (a) dispersed in trichlorotrifluoromethane, (b) dispersed in trichlorotrifluoromethane and a eutectic mixture of diphenyl and diphenyl oxide and (c) in molten form, nitrogen being used as the gaseous fluid.

Abstract: The invention provides a method of bonding and simultaneously printing a fabric, for example a non-woven web, by contacting the surface of the fabric with an ink comprising a dyestuff supported on a transfer sheet and subjecting discrete areas of the combination to heat and pressure. It is found in many cases that dye is strongly fixed, and that compared to conventional heat-transfer printing the method permits much shorter residence times and the possibility of using an extended range of dyestuffs.

Abstract: Method for bonding fabrics based on distributed fusible thermoplastic material, characterized in that a transfer sheet carrying an ink comprising thermally transferable dye is contacted with the fabric; the sheet and the fabric are subjected to heat and pressure in separate areas, whereby the thermoplastic material becomes adhesive and binds the fabric, and the dye is also transferred on the fabric at least in areas corresponding to the separated areas. Abstract: Polyethylene terephthalate of relative viscosity not less than 2.35 (measured as a 1% solution in dichloracetic acid at 25 DEG C.) is made by maintaining particles of polyethylene terephthalate of relative viscosity not less than 1.65 at an elevated temperature and at a combined partial pressure of reaction products of less than 2 mm. of Hg. The solid phase polymerized polyethylene terephthalate may be melted, ground and then subjected to a further solid phase polymerization. The particles of polyester may be in the form of cubes, rectangular parallellpipedons, cylinders or spheres and preferably have dimensions of 0.8 to 4 mm. The reaction may be effected at a total pressure below 2 mm. of Hg or at a higher pressure with a suitable flow of an inert gas (e.g. carbon dioxide, sulphur hexafluoride, nitrogen or methane) or an inert liquid which is gaseous at the reaction temperature (e.g. benzene, trichlorotrifluoroethane or toluene). The reaction may also be effected under fluidized bed or teeter bed conditions. The gas recirculated to the bed may be purified (a) by absorbing all impurities in a molecular sieve, (b) by absorbing only the water in a molecular sieve and recirculating only a major proportion of the gas, that removed being replaced by fresh gas, (c) by removing some of the impurities in a molecular sieve and the remainder in active charcoal, or (d) by heating the whole or part of gas to decompose ethylene glycol into water vapour and inert products and absorbing the water vapour and other volatile and involatile materials before the gas is recirculated. In examples the polyethylene terephthalate to be further polymerized is made by reacting dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol in the presence of calcium acetate or a mixture of manganous acetate and strontium acetate and polycondensing the product in the presence of antimony trioxide, phosphorous acid and, possibly, titanium dioxide.

Abstract: A machine for producing stitch bonded fabrics comprising means for supplying a layer of warp threads, means for continuously supplying a weft thread, means for supplying a plurality of stitching threads and means for stitching the warp layer and weft thread together with said stitching threads, the improvement being that the means for supplying and laying the weft thread consists of a pair of closely spaced plates, means for forwarding an individual thread towards the plates and means for imparting an oscillatory motion to the forwarded thread before it passes between the plates.
