SOLUTION: This liquid crystal aligning agent consists of amic acid which is the reaction product of diamine of 99 to 50 mol.% in the ratio at which 4,4'-(9-fluorenyllidene) dianiline (also known as 9,9-bis(4-aminophyenyl)fluorene) occupies in the entire diamine and tetracarboxylic dianhydride and/or a polymer having an imide group.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liq. crystal alignment agent which forms a liq. crystal alignment layer excellent in adhesion to a substrate board by incorporating a polyamic acid and/or an imidized polyamic acid and a Lewis acid having a metal element into the same. SOLUTION: The polyamic acid is synthesized from a tetracarboxylic dianhydride and a diamine compd., and the imidized polyamic acid is obtd. by the cyclization by dehydration of a polyamic acid under heating in the presence of a dehydrating agent and has a degree of imidization of 10-90% and a logarithmic viscosity (ηin ) (in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone at 30 deg.C) of 0.05-10dl/g. The polyamic acid or the imidized polyamic acid and 0.1-80wt.% (based on the acid) Lewis acid having a metal element, e.g. one in the form of a metal halide such as CuCl2 , are dissolved in an org. solvent (e.g. γ-butyrolactone) to give a soln. with a concn. of 1-10wt.%. The soln. is compounded with 40wt.% (based on the acid) functional silane compd. (e.g. 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane) to improve the adhesion to a substrate board.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal orienting agent capable of exhibiting good printability and defoaming properties and forming a liquid crystal oriented film suitable for composing a liquid crystal display element by including at least one polymer selected from a polyamic acid and a polyimide and a specified solvent. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal orienting agent comprises (A) at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of (i) a polyamic acid prepared by reacting a tetracarboxylic dianhydride with a diamine compound represented by the formula (R1 is a 1-12C hydrocarbon; a is 1-3; b is 1-20) and (ii) a polyimide obtained by cyclodehydrating the component (i) and (B) a solvent containing N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. The content of the component B is 5-90 wt.% based on the liquid crystal orienting agent. The liquid crystal display element can be obtained by using the resultant liquid crystal orienting agent and forming a liquid crystal oriented film. The obtained liquid crystal display element is excellent in orienting properties of liquid crystals and reliability and useful for various devices.
