Abstract: An apparatus and method of forming a coated paper applicator (10) is disclosed for inserting a substance into a body cavity along with the applicator itself. An apparatus for coating paper and a method of forming paper into an applicator are also disclosed. The applicator is especially useful for inserting a catamenial tampon into a woman's vagina. The applicator includes a tubular member (22) formed from at least one layer of paper and has an interior and an exterior surface. The tubular member is capable of holding the substance which is to be inserted. At least one of the surfaces of the tubular member is coated with a water-insoluble coating which is comprised of from between about 95 to about 98 percent by weight of a polymeric material and from between about 2 to about 5 percent by weight of a slip agent. The coating provides the tubular member with a dry coefficient of kinetic friction ranging from between about 0.35 to about 0.56 and a wet coefficient of kinetic friction ranging from between about 0.78 to about 1.06. These low dry and wet coefficient of kinetic friction values facilitate insertion of the applicator into the body cavity and expulsion of the substance from the applicator.

Abstract: A tampon applicator is disclosed which includes first and second telescopically assembled members. The first member is designed to house an absorbent tampon. The first member has first and second spaced apart ends and is formed from at least two separate and distinct layers. An insertion tip is integrally formed on the first end of the first member and extends outwardly therefrom. The insertion tip is constructed from at least one of the two distinct layers and has a thickness which is less than that of the first member. The second member is telescopically mounted in the second end of the first member and is adapted to expel the tampon through the insertion tip as it is pushed into the first member.

Abstract: A tampon applicator is disclosed which has an improved pleated tip for facilitating insertion of a catamenial tampon into a woman's vagina. The tampon applicator includes a first member capable of housing an absorbent tampon. The first member has a central longitudinal axis and first and second ends. An insertion tip is integrally formed on the first end of the first member and extends outwardly therefrom. The insertion tip includes a semi-spherical shaped portion and a frusto-conical shaped portion. The semispherical shaped portion has an aperture extending therethrough and the aperture has a side wall which is aligned essentially parallel to the central longitudinal axis. The frusto-conical shaped portion is situated between the semi-spherical shaped portion and the first end of the first member. The insertion tip contains a plurality of pleats which are capable of expanding radially outwardly as the tampon is expelled from the first member. The applicator further includes a second member telescopically mounted in the second end of the first member. The second member is adapted to expel the tampon through the insertion tip as it is pushed into the first member. The tampon applicator is also disclosed in combination with a catamenial tampon.

Abstract: Un aparato y un método para formar un aplicador de papel recubierto está descrito para insertar una sustancia dentro de una cavidad del cuerpo junto con el aplicador mismo. También se describen un aparato para recubrir papel y un método para formar papel en un aplicador. El aplicador es especialmenteutil para insertar un tapon catamenial dentro de la vagina de una mujer. El aplicador incluye un miembro tubular formado de por lo meneos una capa de papel y tiene una superficie interior y una exterior. El miembro tubular es capaz de contener la sustancia la cual se va a insertar. Por lo menos una de las superficies del miembro tubular está recubierta con un recubrimiento insoluble en agua el cual esta compuesto de desde entre alrededor de 95 a alrededor de 98% por peso de un material polimérico y de desde entre alrededor de 2 a 5% por peso de un agente de resbaldo. El recubrimiento proporciona al miembro tubular con un coeficiente seco de friccion cinética variando de desde entre alrededor de 0.35 a alrededor de 0.56 y un coeficiente y humedo de friccion cinética variando de desde entre alrededor de 0.78 a alrededor de 1.06. Este coeficiente seco y humedo bajo de valores de friccion cinética facilita la insercion del aplicador a adentro del cuerpo humano y la expulsion de la sustancia desde el aplicador.
