Abstract: An air pulse generator (110) for a non-contact tonometer comprises a bidirectional linear motor (124) drivably connected to a compression mechanism (114) and responsive to an applanation signal for reducing unnecessary air pulse energy delivered to an eye (2). Upon receiving the applanation signal from an applanation detector (140), a motor controller (138) reverses current flow in the coil (130) of the motor (124) to create a reverse electromagnetic force to stop generation of the air pulse. In a first embodiment, the linear motor (124) includes a moving permanent magnet armature (126) for reversibly driving the compression mechanism (114), while in a second embodiment, the linear motor (124) includes a moving coil (230) for reversibly driving the compression mechanism (214).

Abstract: Optical properties of a lens, including localized defects, are determined by analyzing the refracted image produced by transmitting a beam of light through an aperture and a lens to be tested. The image is reflected onto a light sensitive detecting surface. Information obtained from the light detecting surface is digitized and sent to an Image Processing Unit which calculates the optical properties of the lens. The aperture may consist of a single shaped opening or alternatively a plurality of concentric, annular rings. Correction lenses may be employed, either permanently or selectively, to alter the refracted beam before the beam intersects the detecting surface.

Abstract: An optical alignment system using at least one CCD array (28) for positioning an instrument in a chosen relationship to an object (20) is disclosed. Means for "electronically" aligning the optical components and providing a macro view of the object on a CRT (66) without additional illumination are also disclosed. Alignment may be achieved manually, if the operator observes the position of symbols on the CRT that move in response to movement of the instrument by the operator using a joystick (6), or automatically using information provided by the array.
