Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an excellent optical fiber, enabling to prevent the elliptical deformation of a tube and shortening a collapsing time in a collapsing process. SOLUTION: The ellipticity of a preform is monitored and controlled during a modified chemical vapor phase deposition method (MCVD method). During the rotation of the tube the diameter of the tube is measured with a laser micrometer 47 at different angles, and the outer shape and ellipticity of the tube are calculated from the measured valves with a microprocessor 46. A gas flow controller 43 is operated with commands obtained by treating the data, and an oxyhydrogen torch 42 is further controlled. Thereby, the temperature of the tube 41 is locally and dynamically controlled to dynamically change the shape of the tube. Namely, a collapsing rate is dynamically controlled by changing a physical force acting so as to collapse the tube.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the length of a device by allowing the core of an optical fiber, to have an effective mode diameter in the fundamental waveguide space mode of a laser wavelength and to have the diameter of the distribution region of a rare earth dopant, and then increasing the diameter of the distribution region as compared with the effective mode diameter of the distribution region. SOLUTION: In an optical fiber 10, an inner clad layer 13 and an outer clad layer 11 are formed around a core 12. Doping by a rare earth element is performed nearly constantly to the core 12 and the inner clad layer 13, while a dopnat for increasing a refractive index is performed further to the core 12. The diameter and the reflective index of the core 12 are selected, so that the optical fiber 10 is a single-mode fiber at a laser wavelength and has the effective mode diameter of a unique fundamental space mode. When the outer diameter of the inner clad layer 13 is set to the diameter of the distribution region of a rare earth element dopant, the diameter of the distribution region of the rare earth element dopant is made to be longer than the diameter of the effective mode.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a fused fiber bundle having high efficiency and high strength and free from gap on the cross-section by bundling a plurality of optical fibers, adding a glass precursor material optionally containing colloidal particles and heating and melting the product after drying. SOLUTION: Plural multi-mode fibers 21 each having a semiconductor emitter source 29 at the end are bundled at the bundling region 22 and arranged in closely packed state preferably contacting the inside fiber with the maximum number of surrounding fibers. A glass precursor material is added to the fibers in the bundling of the fibers 21. The glass precursor is composed mainly of vitreous silica and contains colloidal particles when the fiber has circular cross- section or is free from particles when the fibers have flat planes opposite to each other. The bundle is compacted to the minimum diameter 24 via a tapered region 23 and welded by heating to form a clad pump fiber 25.

The inner clad layer is enclosed by an outer clad layer. This outer clad layer has a first outer clad layer 13 between the inner clad layer and a second outer clad layer 14. The core, the inner clad layer, the first outer clad layer and the second outer clad layer are made of the glass obtd. from a preform. The refractive index of the first outer clad layer is below 1.35 and the optical characteristic of the optical fiber of the first outer clad layer is independent from the second outer clad layer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a graded fiber bundle for inputting, outputting and coupling light to a clad pumping fibers device with low loss without the need for a polishing or reflection preventive film and without the need for maintaining the alignment of a bulk optical system. SOLUTION: The light is coupled from plural semiconductor emitters through the graded fiber bundle fusion spliced to the clad pumping fibers 15 to the clad pumping fibers 15. The individual semiconductor wide stripe emitters may be coupled to individual multimode fibers 11. The individual fibers 11 are bundled in proximity, are heated to a m.p., are drawn to tapers and are next fusion spliced to the clad pumping fibers 15. The tapers are advantageous when the tapers are coated with a clad material like a low-refractive index polymer. In addition, the fibers including single mode cores may be included within the fiber bundle. The single mode cores are usable for coupling the light into the single mode cores of the clad pumping fibers 15 or outside from the cores.

Abstract: In accordance with the invention, light is coupled from a plurality of semiconductor emitters to a cladding-pumped fiber via tapered fiber bundles fusion spliced to the cladding-pumped fiber. Individual semiconductor broad stripe emitters can be coupled to individual multimode fibers. The individual fibers can be bundled together in a close-packed formation, heated to melting temperature, drawn into a taper and then fusion spliced to the cladding-pumped fiber. Advantageously, the taper is then overcoated with cladding material such as low index polymer. In addition, a fiber containing a single-mode core can be included in the fiber bundle. This single-mode core can be used to couple light into or out of the single-mode core of the cladding-pumped fiber.

This result is achieved by compensation doping the core (21) with phosphorus to offset the index-modifying contribution of aluminum.
