Abstract:
A method and an apparatus for maintaining a quality of service (QoS) for a multi-media packet data service in a transport network is provided. The method comprises determining a first packet loss indication for a first flow of QoS traffic packets. The method further comprises determining a second packet loss indication for a second flow of QoS traffic packets, wherein the determination of the first packet loss indication for the first flow of QoS traffic packets is independent from the determination of the second packet loss indication for the second flow of QoS traffic packets. The method further comprises determining whether to drop the first flow of QoS traffic packets based on the first packet loss indication or to drop the second flow of QoS traffic packets based on the second packet loss indication. By using per- flow independent packet loss statistics to determine whether that flow should be dropped and gradually dropping such QoS flows having the most impact on a desired QoS performance, a reduced number of QoS flows may be dropped to recover a data transport network from congestion.
Abstract:
A method and an apparatus for reducing packet loss for a packet data service during congestion in a transport network are provided. The method comprises measuring a packet loss rate over a time period in one or more flows of data traffic packets associated with the packet data service to determine whether the one or more flows of data traffic packets are experiencing a variation in a desired traffic performance level at a particular time duration during the congestion in the time period. The method further comprises triggering a request to reduce a flow rate of at least one of the one or more flows of data traffic packets based on the packet loss rate if the at least one of the one or more flows of data traffic packets experiences the variation in the desired traffic performance level. By using a distributed transport congestion control, for example, only such Best Effort data traffic packet flows that generate bursty traffic at a specific moment of congestion sense the congestion and thus trigger an associated rate reduction action. However, other flows that do not experience the congestion may not be affected.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method of dynamically forming a neighbor list in a wireless communication system. Embodiments of the method may include forming a neighbor list associated with at least one sector based on information provided by at least one mobile unit.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for use in improving the performance of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) communication systems which use Robust Header Compression (RoHC) techniques for reducing communications protocol overhead. Specifically, having recognized that in VoIP applications (unlike, for example, data services applications), severely late packets cannot be used, a "RoHC-Guard" (2) filters out packets that are very late, making it impossible for RoHC to perform the costly and unnecessary re-sync. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a RoHC-Guard module (2), operating as a pre-filter to a RoHC module (3), saves, rather than merely discards, late packets. Then, if a predetermined number of such packets are consecutively received, they are provided to RoHC module (3).
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method for controlling mobile unit response messages. One embodiment of the method includes providing, to a mobile unit, at least one message including information indicative of at least one parameter for configuring at least one response to said at least one message for transmission over an access channel.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for enabling at least one location- based service between an originating party and a destination party on a wireless network. The method comprises integrating access to the at least one location-based service substantially simultaneously with an offering of at least one multi-media service for voice and data over the wireless network. The method further comprises initiating the at least one location-based service in response to receiving an inquiry from the originating party for determining a network location of a target mobile terminal associated with the destination party. A service platform may generate substantially simultaneously multi-media services including a location-based service based on location information of a destination user in a wireless network, such as a mobile data network.
