Abstract: An automatic transaction system which enables payment in multiple currencies for the dispensing of a product or the providing of a service. In one embodiment, the automatic transaction system performs a conversion of payment deposited in currencies to credit amounts in the base currency to facilitate payment of any change due in denominations of the base currency. The conversion technique employed by one embodiment of the system translates the value of the denominations of a deposited second currency to a value in the base currency using an exchange rate. The translated value is then rounded down to the nearest multiple of an increment of the base currency accepted by the system. In other embodiment, the system performs conversion of deposited currencies to a reference currency while paying change in the base currency.

Abstract: A last-in-first-out coin store comprises a tubular housing (21) in which a coin stack support (22) is driven upwardly or downwardly by an endless belt (28) driven from a motor (23). A coin dispensing mechanism comprises a bar (37) positioned above the tubular housing (21) between a pair of beams (A, B) of light mutually normal, axially displaced along the coin store axis by half the width of a coin, and crossing the centre of the coin stack. A control circuit (80) raises and lowers the coin support (22) automatically so as to maintain the uppermost coin at a position where one, but not both, of the light beams are broken so that a coin is ready to be dispensed by the bar (37). A count is kept of the number of coins by a counter circuit (90) responsive to an encoder on the drive belt (28). Useful in gaming machines or change giving coin freed machines.

Abstract: A banknote validator comprises a banknote transport path divided in multiple transport sub-systems. Each sub-system is easy to maintain because the axes of a sub-system are in reduced number, and easily removable for maintenance of the sub-system. The validator allows continuous frictional engagement of a banknote in the transport path, including between sub-systems.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for reducing vandalism and minimizing damage from liquids injected into apertures of a vending machine is described. An anti-salting module (1), having a housing with an integral tray (2) for collecting liquids, is connected beneath a bill validator (100) in a vending machine. A rubber fillet (5) is connected to the rear of the bill validator and directs injected fluids to the tray. A moisture sensor (4) integral to the tray is connected to detection and control circuitry. When moisture is detected, the detection and control circuitry operates to interrupt power and control signals to the bill validator. After moisture has been detected, vending machine power and control signals can be restored only when moisture is no longer present, and a set switch (84) is depressed by service personnel.

Abstract: A coin validator is provided in the region of its entrance hopper with a flap (8) which is caused to pivot against the action of a spring (10) when a coin (2) is inserted in the hopper. In the case of fraudulent use of the coin validator wherein a thread is attached to a coin, the movement of the flap into the closed position following passage of the coin causes a tension to be applied in the trailing thread, and the thread under tension is then sensed by a lever mechanism (not shown). Actuation of the lever mechanism by the tensioned thread inhibits validation of the attached coin, e.g. by causing any credit added by the passage of the coin past a testing station to be debited before returning the coin to the user.

Abstract: A coin validator (2) has a thickness sensor formed by two coils (10, 12) positioned one on each side of the coin path. The coil outputs are processed separately using a look-up table (20) to derive values which are linearly related to coin position across the width of the passage, using the same constant of proportionality for both sensors. Accordingly, by combining the processed outputs there is derived a value which is independent of coin position and which can be peak-detected to indicate thickness.

Abstract: A data carrying device (2) communicates in a contactless manner with an interrogator, which transmits data by amplitude modulation of a carrier (Fig. 4c). The device includes a data detection circuit (10) which is synchronized to the carrier and which generates a pulse (T1) of a first length at regular intervals if the carrier remains unmodulated and generates a pulse (T2) of a different length if a modulation of the carrier is detected. An input/output line (16) conveys the pulses to a processor (6). During data transmissions from the interrogator, pulses of both lengths, representing the data, are delivered to the processor. During data transmissions from the device (Fig. 3), pulses (104) of one length act as clock pulses determining the time at which data is applied to the input/output line by the processor. The impedance of the token is modulated, and the carrier thus affected in a detectable fashion, in response to the data placed on the input/output line by the processor.

Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for the autodiscrimination of barcodes. First, an interrupt driven technique for timing the duration of space and barcode data is described which allows a microprocessor to decode a first quantum of barcode data during a substantial portion of the time the microprocessor is timing the duration of space and bar data of a second quantum of barcode data. Second, an improved method of locating a barcode margin and eliminating types of barcodes to be tried for purposes of decoding is described. Briefly, an integer ratio of space and following bar duration data is compared to a predetermined number, and a determination is made as to whether the space is a margin based on the comparison. Preferably, the two techniques are used in conjunction to speed the autodiscrimination in apparatus for scanning a plurality of different types of bar codes.
