    Abstract: Disclosed is method and arrangement for speech recognition for use in a speech recognition system, wherein a grammar model may be stored in memory, the grammar model being composed of nodes connected by arcs, each arc generally having an associated template prestored in memory and respective originating and terminating grammar nodes, and wherein groups of input frames may be compared to templates to generate similarity measure parameters. The invention includes structuring the grammar model such that arcs may be looped within the structure. For implementing this type of structure, the invention includes providing first parameter storage and second parameter storage for one or more nodes including a terminating node for a selected arc, determining similarity measure parameters for the originating node for the selected arc, determining similarity measure parameters for the arc using a template associated with the arc and the originating node's similarity measure parameters. Further, similarity measure parameters are determined at the terminating node and are stored in the first parameter storage for the terminating node. The first parameter storage contents are transferred to the second parameter storage for the terminating node, and the groups of input frames are recognized using the parameter storage contents associated with the terminating node.

    Abstract: The present invention describes a method and arrangement for reducing a sequence of initial frames into a reduced set of representative frames by combining the initial frames into a plurality of representative frames, the combining process including generating a distortion measure associated with each representative frame and comparing each distortion measure to a distortion threshold. From these representative frames, a set of mutually exclusive frames is determined to minimize the number of representative frames, whereby each representative frame in the set represents a unique set of contiguous initial frames and has an associated distortion measure which does not exceed the distortion threshold.

    Abstract: CM00382H DIGITAL SPEECH CODER HAVING IMPROVED VECTOR EXCITATION SOURCE An improved excitation vector generation and search technique (Fig. 1) is described for a code-excited linear prediction (CELP) speech coder (100) using a codebook of excitation code vectors. A set of M basic vectors vm(n) are used along with the excitation signal codewords (i) to generate the codebook of excitation vectors ui(n) according to a "vector sum" technique (120) of converting the selector codewords into a plurality of interim data signals, multiplying the set of M basis vectors by the interim data signals, and summing the resultant vectors to produce the set of 2M codebook vectors. The entire codebook of 2M possible excitation vectors is efficiently searched by using the vector sum generation technique with the M basic vectors -- without ever having to generate and evaluate each of the 2M code vectors themselves. Furthermore, only M basis vectors need to be stored in memory (114), as opposed to all 2M code vectors.

    Abstract: A method for protecting information bits wherein input data bits, at least some of which are to be protected, are sorted based upon information determined from a subset of the input data bits. An error control coding technique is applied to at least some of the sorted bits. In the preferred embodiment, an input data stream of voice coder bits is separated into arrays of bits. A first array (302) comprises voice coder bits needing error protection, with the bits arranged in order of importance determined by voicing mode. The second array (303) comprises bits that will not be error protected. The bits from the first array are provided to the input of an encoder (304), then the encoded bits are combined (305) with the bits from the second array (303) to form a bit stream.

    Abstract: A Vector-Sum Excited Linear Predictive Coding (VSELP) speech coder provides improved quality and reduced complexity over a typical speech coder. VSELP uses a codebook which has a predefined structure such that the computations required for the codebook search process can be significantly reduced. This VSELP speech coder uses single or multi-segment vector quantizer of the reflection coefficients based on a Fixed-Point-Lattice-Technique (FLAT). Additionally, this speech coder uses a pre-quantizer to reduce the vector codebook search complexity and a high-resolution scalar quantizer to reduce the amount of memory needed to store the reflection coefficient vector codebooks. Resulting in a high quality speech coder with reduced computations and storage requirements.
