    Abstract: A signal that includes noise (301) is sampled to provide a plurality of digital information samples (303). A predetermined number of the digital information samples are grouped as a set (305). Noise suppression is performed on the signal using the following steps. One or more digital representations of silence is attached to the set, forming an extended set (401). A Fourier transform is performed on the extended set, yielding a set of frequency domain coefficients (403), at least some of which are scaled (405). An inverse Fourier transform is performed on the set of scaled frequency domain coefficients to provide a set of time domain samples (407), which are partially overlapped in time and added with a previously formed set of time domain samples (409 and 411), which result is provided with the non-overlapping time domain samples as a noise suppressed version of the signal (413).

    Abstract: A filter (202) generates an echo estimate z(n) at an output (209), a subtractor (204) generates an echo cancelled signal r(n) at an output (105) for transmission, a filter control (208) provides updated coefficients w(n) at an output (207) for the filter (202), and a time manager (210) sends a control signal t(n) to the filter control (208). The time manager (210) assigns intervals for step size adaptation during which an adaptive step size filter control (500) is chosen whereas another filter control (400, fig 4) is used outside of the assigned adaptation interval. During the assigned time interval for step size adaptation, adaptive filters (502-504) generate echo residual signal B s (n), B m (n), B L (n) corresponding to different steps sizes and the step size is chosen which is the one corresponding to the adaptive filter with the smallest echo residual energy. The adaptive step size can be employed in each adaptive filter of a subband echo canceller (300 fig 3).
