Abstract: The present invention relates to a subscriber device that is capable of registering on more than one communication network simultaneously, and to a location register for a communication network for recording the networks on which the subscriber device is simultaneously registered. The subscriber device may be active on all registered networks, or only on one registered network. The location register may prioritise the list of network registrations. A method of maintaining the location register and of setting up a call to the subscriber device is also disclosed.

Abstract: In a digital broadcast service such as satellite television, an information circuit is formed comprising a broadcast service provider 234, a set-top box 200, and a wireless device such as a mobile phone 106. Each device in the circuit is authenticated to the other devices in the circuit before access to a requested service is allowed. Each device creates and manages a service record corresponding to the requested service and a partner identity record corresponding to each other device in the circuit. The set-top box authenticates a subscriber's smart card, the service provider authenticates the set-top box and the cellular communication network authenticates the mobile phone. Authentication information is passed around the circuit to all the devices and access to the requested service is granted when the authentication status of all devices is known and the circuit is complete.

Abstract: A communication system (100), comprising a first communication unit (112) communicating (118) with a second communication unit (122), said first communication unit (112) transmitting to said second communication unit a preamble (516) prior to a message, wherein the preamble is a concatenation of signals, said second communication unit receives and decodes the preamble (516) and compares the received concatenated signals with known predetermined concatenated signals to determine whether an error has occurred in said preamble (516) or said first message. This enables a system employing the FAUSCH concept to carry more information than a simple request for a channel. For example, it could include the data rate of the required channel. It also allows an extra degree of flexibility when designing the protocols. It allows forward error correction to be applied to the channel. Hence, the receiver can detect and correct some transmission errors.
