Abstract:
Lubricant compositions containing oleaginous materials and, in amounts sufficient to impart resistance to oxidation and metal corrosion thereto, reaction products of a benzotriazole compound and an organic sulfur containing compound selected from the group consisting of .alpha. and .beta. substituted allyl sulfides and disulfides, and sulfurized olefins, having reactive unsaturated bonds.
Abstract:
Novel cobalt thiobis (alkylphenolates) and coordination compounds thereof with alcohols, alkyl amines, or aryl amines are effective anti-oxidant additives for various organic media such as oils of lubricating viscosity and plastics. Synergistic and improved antioxidant combinations are formed from the admixture of said additives and known antioxidants such as N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine. Additionally, these cobalt thiobis(alkylphenolates), coordination compounds thereof and said combinations are also highly useful as energy quenchers and antisludging agents in organic substrates.
Abstract:
Lubricant compositions are provided which contain: oleaginous media, and an antiwear improving amount of a product formed by reacting (a) a compound having the formula: ##STR1## where R' is a substantially unbranched paraffinic alkyl group containing from about 10 to about 36 carbon atoms, and R is a hydrocarbyl group containing from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms with at least one hydrogen atom present on the carbon atom which is bonded to the oxygen; with (b) a substituted imidazoline of the formula: ##STR2## where one of the R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 substituents must be a substantially unbranched paraffinic or olefinic hydrocarbyl group containing from about 12 to about 35 carbon atoms; and the other R.sup.2 or R.sup.3 substituent is selected from the group consisting of: paraffinic alkyl containing from 1 to about 35 carbon atoms, alkenyl containing from 1 to about 35 carbon atoms, and hydroxy-, alkoxy-, alkoxymethoxy-, and oxo-substituted alkyl and alkenyl containing from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms; at proportions which are most preferably stoichiometric and at temperatures greater than 150.degree. C. Particularly contemplated are compositions in the form of lubricating oils and greases.
Abstract:
New reaction products obtained by reacting (1) a hindered phenol, (2) a boron compound and (3) an amine together are described. Preferred reaction sequences are:(a) (2)+(1), then this product with (3); and(b) (2)+(3), then this product with (1).Also described are lubricant compositions containing the reaction products and a method of reducing fuel consumption in an internal combustion engine by lubricating the engine with a lubricant containing the reaction product.
Abstract:
A method for conducting transesterification reactions employing a catalyst system comprising metallic sodium and aluminum isopropoxide which provides a facile, high yield, means for producing compounds such as esters of alkyl- and alkyloxy-substituted arylamines.
Abstract:
Hydrolysis products of 1-(2-hydroxyalkyl)-2-alkyl- or alkenyl imidazolines and borated adducts of hydrolyzed 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-alkylimidazolines are highly effective friction reducing or friction modifying additives when incorporated into lubricating compositions.
Abstract:
A process wherein a sulfur halide and an olefin reacted in the presence of catalytic amounts of iodine provides an increased yield of an intermediate adduct with high olefin to sulfur halide ratio; said adduct is thereafter sulfurized with a metal sulfide to provide increased yield of a sulfurized olefin and, when a minor amount of sulfur halide is added to the adduct prior sulfurizing, a substantially increased yield of sulfurized olefin highly useful as a lubricant additive having improved copper corrosion properties is provided.
Abstract:
Lubricant additives having substantially improved extreme pressure characteristics are provided by modifying certain sulfurized olefins by reacting said olefins with a cyclic polydisulfide under controlled reaction conditions and at a temperature of at least about 130.degree. C.
Abstract:
Lubricant compositions containing oleaginous materials and, in amounts sufficient to impart oxidation protection, corrosion resistance and antiwear properties thereto, an adduct of a benzotriazole compound and alkyl vinyl ether or a vinyl ester of a carboxylic acid.
