Abstract: An article designed for the adherent vulcanization of rubber thereto, e.g. a tyre bead wire, comprises a ferrous metal base; a corrosion-resistant coating of zinc, cadmium, or tin; a thin barrier coating of nickel, cobalt, or antimony; and a rubber-adherent coating of copper, copper-zinc alloys (brasses) containing 60 to 80% copper, copper-cadmium alloys containing 60 to 80% copper, or copper-tin alloys (bronzes) containing 70 to 99% copper, but excluding a ferrous metal base coated successively with zinc, nickel, and copper as in the parent Specification. Typically a ferrous tyre bead core is first cleaned, a zinc, cadmium or tin corrosion-resistant coating is applied electrolytically or by hot dipping; a barrier coating of nickel or cobalt is applied electrolytically or a coating of antimony is applied by displacement; and a copper, brass or bronze coating is applied electrolytically. The barrier displacement coating of antimony is formed in a bath containing antimony trisulphide, sodium cyanide and caustic soda.
