[Also in Division D1] A polymer comprises the recurring unit where R is a C 2-4 alkylene radical which may be substituted with a C 1-4 alkyl radical, a carboxyl group or a carbalkoxy group, R 1 is H or a C 1-4 alkyl radical; R II and R III are H, a C 1-4 alkyl, aryl, aryloxy, or C 1-4 alkoxy radical, R IV is -OCOCH 3 , -COOCH 3 or -CN and n is 2-24. The polymer may be prepared by reacting a copolymer comprising the unit with an aminothiol of formula where R, R I , R II , R III and R IV are as before. In examples a methyl acrylate/maleic anhydride, maleic anhydride/methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile/maleic anhydride or maleic anhydride/vinyl acetate copolymers were condensed with #-mercaptoethylamine, the copolymer having been obtained by polymerizing the monomers in toluene using benzoyl peroxide or azo-bis-isobutyronitrile as catalyst. The polymer may be compounded with urea, ammonia and water.

    Abstract: A polymer having a molecular weight less than 6000 which is soluble in water at basic pH values and having the formula where R is a C2- 4 alkylene radical which may contain as substituent a C1- 4 alkyl, carboxyl or carbalkoxy group; R1 is H or a C1- 4 alkyl, and R11 and R111 are R1, aryl, aryloxy or a C1- 4 alkoxy, and n is 1-24 is prepared by reacting a copolymer containing with an aminothiol of formula HS-R-NHR1, where R and R1 are as before. The polymer may be produced by copolymerizing maleic anhydride with styrene or ethylene and then reacting the copolymer with b -mercapto-ethylamine or cysteine. The thiolated polymer, e.g. 1-20%, may be compounded with urea, ammonia, and water.ALSO:Keratinic fibres are impregnated with a solution e.g. 1-20%, of a polymer of molecular weight less than 6,000 which is soluble in water at baric pH values and which has the formula where R is a C2-4 alkylene which may be substituted, R1 is H or a C1-4 alkyl and R11 and R111 are R1, aryl, arylotz or C1-4 alkoxy and n is 1-24. The solution may also contain urea and ammonia. The fibre may be wool or natural hair on the human head and may be constrained during treatment to a desired configuration.

    Abstract: Keratinic textile materials are dyed by a process in which the material is pretreated with an aqueous solution of a polysulphhydryl polymer as defined followed by application of the dyestuff. Preferably the polysulphydryl is applied from basic solution the material hydroextracted, rinsed with water and treated with acid to insolubilise the polysulphydryl polymer in situ before the dye is applied. Optionally the keratinic material may be bleached or oxidised with hypochlorite or peroxide before application of the polymer. Four typical structures of polysulphydryl polymer units are described. Reactive and premetallised dyes are employed in the dyeing processes.
