Abstract: A two-piece cable tie (100) is provided that can be more readily assembled and achieves a low insertion force while maintaining desired strap retention force. The cable tie (100) includes a metal locking device (136) that is bent at a predetermined bend angle and then precisely located within a locking device receiving cavity (180). The metal locking device (136), which is preferably prebent, is mounted within the metal locking device receiving cavity (180) by having a fixed end (134) mounted to a support slot of the end wall of the locking head (102) and oriented substantially parallel to the strap accepting channel axis. The metal locking device (136) further includes a free end (138) angled at an acute angle relative to the strap accepting channel axis and extending into the strap accepting channel (122). When mounted, the free end (138) preferably substantially rests upon a fulcrum point of the extending wall and extends beyond the wall by a predetermined distance into the strap accepting channel (122).

Abstract: A cable tie (100) is provided that includes an integral cable tie head (120) and strap (110). The strap (110) includes a first end forming a neck section (130), a free end (112) opposite the first end, and an intermediate section (114) between the first end and the free end (112), the intermediate section (114) having a predetermined width B1 and thickness T1 defining a predetermined cross-sectional area. The cable tie head (120) is secured to the neck area (130) of the strap at the first end of the strap, the cable tie head (120) having a width E that is wider than strap width B and including a strap accepting channel (140) containing a locking device (150). The strap accepting channel (140) is sized to receive the free end (112) of the strap (110). The next section (130) has a width that transitions from a width of B to a width E' that is substantially the same as width E and a thickness of T2 that is thinner than T1, the neck section (130) having a cross-sectional area that is at least substantially equal to the cross-sectional area of the intermediate section (114) of the strap (110) so as to have a tensile strength at least equal to a tensile strength of the intermediate section (114) of the strap (110). The cable tie (100) may be a bent neck type cable tie. Preferably, the neck section (130) has at least one recessed channel (132,134) defining the reduced thickness T2 and thickened side portions.

Abstract: A two piece cable tie (100) is provided having an improved locking device support. The cable tie (100) includes a strap (104) with a first end and a free end, a locking head (102) having a strap accepting channel (122), and a metal locking device (136) mounted within an anchoring housing region of the head to form a cantilever beam having a mounted end (134) fixed to a support of the locking head and a free end (138) positioned within the strap accepting channel (122). The strap (104) includes a central inwardly projecting groove of a predefined width that defines a thinned portion extending along a longitudinal axis of the strap (104) to the free end of the strap. The strap accepting channel (122) has a channel width W1 defined between an end wall (124) and the inner wall (126). The strap accepting channel (122) also includes a support guide (114) projecting from the inner wall of the locking head (102) into the strap accepting channel (122) to restrict the width of the channel accepting channel to a width W2, which is less than W1. The free end (138) of the metal locking device (136) has a length L that is greater than W2 and preferably no greater than W1. The support guide (114) has a width transverse to the width of the strap accepting channel (122) that is less than the predefined width of the projecting groove (110) of the strap. The support guide (114) also includes a ledge (116) that provides a support surface for the metal locking device (136) that changes the locking device (136) from one having a cantilever support to one with a simple beam support when the locking device (136) is bent downward by a sufficient withdrawal force. This withdrawal force is sufficient to cause the locking device (136) to fully pierce the thinned portion of the strap (104), which allows the free end (138) of the locking device (136) to rest upon the ledge (116).

Abstract: A two piece cable tie (100) is provided having an improved metal locking device anchoring system. The cable tie includes a strap (104) including a first end and a free end and a locking head (102) secured to the first end of the strap that defines a strap accepting channel (122) in the head having a strap entry end (168) and a strap exit end (166). The locking head further includes a metal locking device (136) receiving cavity (180) adjacent to and open toward the strap exit end (166) of the locking head (102) and a mounting slot (130) having an inner support wall, an outer support wall and a support slot communicating the mounting slot with the receiving cavity. A metal locking device (136) is mounted through the metal locking device receiving cavity (180) into the mounting slot (130). The metal locking device (136) has a free end (138) positioned within the strap accepting channel (122) and a fixed end (134) having at least one bent tang (132) protruding outwardly from a surface of the metal locking device (136). The fixed end (134) having the at least one bent tang (132) is insertable through the support slot. Upon such insertion, the inner support surface (162) of the mounting slot (130) resiliently urges at least a protruding edge of the at least one bent tang (132) against the outer support surface (164) to anchor the metal locking device (136) within the mounting slot (130) and resist withdrawal of the metal locking device (136) in a direction towards the exit end of the strap accepting channel (122). The inventive cable tie (106) is capable of multiple strap threading without failure. The barbed anchoring system and method are particularly suited for cable ties having a bent metal locking device with a mounting slot parallel with the strap accepting channel.
