Abstract: There is disclosed a hand tool for tensioning and severing straps of the type used in binding bundles of wires into cables, such straps including a connector adjacent one end thereof and the other end being free and adapted to be wrapped around the bundle to be bound and thereafter slid through the connector in a tightening movement, the tensioning and severing tool has a pair of jaws, one of which engages the connector and the other of which engages the free strap and extending beyond the connector, drive mechanism for tensioning the strap by moving the jaws apart and for thereafter actuating a strap-severing blade after the application of a predetermined force between the jaws, the tool of the present invention including mechanism for applying a restraining force upon the severing blade drive mechanism of a character which will prevent blade severing movement until the aforementioned predetermined tension is reached in the strap, after which means is provided that serves substantially instantaneously to relieve or reduce the restraining force in the blade drive mechanism, whereby the blade drive mechanism immediately and quickly actuates the blade to sever the strap; a combined trigger-type drive mechanism is provided which ensures that the same tension is produced in the strap at the cut-off no matter how the handle actuating the drive mechanism is gripped by the user; the blade drive mechanism is such that immediately upon cut-off, and before the blade actually cuts through the entire strap, the drive tension is released so that the blade never strikes the anvil or backup for the strap; finally, a novel adjustment mechanism is provided for adjusting the predetermined tension at which cut-off of the free strap end is effective.

The dispenser mechanism (32) including a reel mechanism (62) for providing the cable tie ribbon (38) to the dispenser mechanism (32), a grooved cylinder (64) that carries individual cable ties (40) for positioning and translating the ribbon (38) longitudinally, an index mechanism (66) for rotating the cylinder (64) in accurate increments, a mechanism for separating individual cable ties from the ribbon, a guide mechanism (68) for positioning the ribbon (38) laterally relative to the separation means and a mechanism (72) for transferring the separated cable ties to the conveyance mechanism (34). The ribbon (38) includes a strip portion (44) extending the length of the ribbon (38) having a plurality of cable ties (40) connected thereto by respective connecting tabs (46). Abstract: A tool (20) for applying an elongate connector (22) to a plurality of insulated conductors (26). The connector (22) includes a base (30) and a cover (41) with the base (30) having a plurality of insulation displacement terminal elements (46) extending toward the cover (41). The base (30) and cover (41) are joined by interconnection means (52) for holding the connector (22) in an insertion position for receiving the conductors (26). The base (30) and cover (41) are movable from the insertion position to a connector termination position in which the elements engage the conductors (26). The tool (20) includes a die (88) for moving the connector (22) to its termination position, holding means (86, 90) for positioning the connector (22) with respect to the die (88) and prime mover means connected to cause the die (88) and a component of the holding means (86, 90) to undergo reciprocal movement relative to one another. The holding means (86, 90) includes stop means (90) positioned to engage the connector (22) when it is in its insertion position. The stop means (90) is spaced from the connector (22) when the connector (22) has been moved to its termination position whereby, prior to termination, the stop means (90) maintains the connector (22) in alignment with the die (88) and, after termination, the connector (22) can be removed from the tool (20) without interference from the stop means (90).
