Abstract: A connector is disclosed for joining two cable ends. The connector may include a load transfer plug (17) adapted to couple to a strength member in each end of the cable. A connector insert assembly (25,26) may be coupled to an inner portion of each load transfer plug. Conductor terminals are disposed in corresponding openings of the insert. The terminals protrude from the insert. An alignment sleeve holder is coupled to one of the insert assemblies. The alignment sleeve holder includes alignment sleeves for receiving the protruding terminals. A housing element is sealingly coupled to an exterior of each of the plugs. The housing elements are adapted to coupled to each other and to urge the connector insert assemblies into contact with each other, and to transfer axial load between the plug coupled to each end of the cable. The housing elements have rotational and axial alignment features on corresponding surfaces. The housing elements are adapted to be removed from the plugs without uncoupling the cable from the plug.

Abstract: A hydrophone 10 has a first optical fibre 14 wound on a compliant tubular sensing mandrel 12 and a second optical fibre 18 wound around a rigid reference mandrel 16. The first and second optical fibres comprise legs of an interferometer. A sealed air or fluid filled chamber 24 functions as a compliant cavity behind the sensing mandrel 12. Flexible seals 20 (eg o-rings) prevent fatigue damage to the hydrophone from repeated deformation of the sensing mandrel 12. In various examples of construction the sensing mandrel may be adjacent to or mounted coaxially inside or outside the reference mandrel. The hydrophone has a high hydrostatic pressures rating and in one embodiment includes a tube to equalise the hydrostatic pressures acting on either side of the sensing mandrel.

Abstract: An accelerometer 10 includes a beam 12 and at least one optical fibre 14 affixed to one side of the beam such that deflection of the beam caused by acceleration changes a length of the optical fibre. Changes in the length of the fibre may be sensed using an interferometer. A second optical fibre 16 may be affixed to the other side of the beam such that deflection of the beam changes the length of fibre 16 in the opposite sense to fibre 14. A seismic sensor system including two or three such accelerometers oriented such that their sensitive axes are at least partially aligned along mutually orthogonal directions is also disclosed, as is a gravity orientation sensor comprising at least one optical fibre defining a Bragg grating, the fibre being coupled to a mass mounted in a frame such that orientation of the frame with respect to gravity allows gravity to act on the mass so as to strain the grating and provide a measure of inclination of the sensor.
