Abstract:
A catalyst composition can be obtained by gently milling a milled mixture of a magnesium halide and a titanium tetrahalide with a magnesium alkoxide. The catalyst composition can be combined with a metallic hydride or, preferably, an organometallic co-catalyst, e.g., an organoaluminum compound, to form a catalyst useful for the polymerization of alpha-ole-fins.
Abstract:
Alpha-olefins are polymerized employing a catalyst which forms on mixing a catalyst component A formed by milling together a magnesium halide or manganous halide with selected catalyst adjuvants followed by treatment of the resulting milled product with a halogenated tetravalent titanium compound and combining the product thus formed with a cocatalyst component B comprising at least one of an organoaluminum compound and an organoaluminum monohalide with or without an aromatic ester as a part of the cocatalyst system.
Abstract:
A magnesium reducing agent is prepared by dropwise addition of an organic halide onto magnesium metal in the absence of an ether or other complexing diluent, preferably in the absence of any e?raneous diluent, to form a magnesium reducing agent which is thereafter mixed with an organoaluminum halide to form a cocatalyst. The resulting cocatalyst is contacted with a titanium tetrahalide to give a catalyst. This catalyst is suitable for olefin polymerization and particularly suitable for the polymerization of ethylene.

A method of producing a xerogel which involves passing a solvent in which water is soluble through a hydrogel under conditions to remove water from the hydrogel and to form a xerogel.

Abstract:
Polymer containing catalyst residues from catalysts having at least one atom of halide are contacted with a treating agent comprising in combination a monoalkyl ether of a glycol and an alkylene oxide to reduce the level of catalyst residues in the polymer.
Abstract:
A process for polymerizing alpha-olefins in the presence of a catalyst comprising two components. Component A is obtained by mixing a magnesium dihydrocarbyloxide compound with a tetravalent, halogenated titanium compound and then contacting the resultant product with a dihydrocarbylmagnesium compound. Component B comprises a metallic hydride or an organometallic compound, e.g., an organosluminum compound.
