Abstract: A method and apparatus for matching the location of the forward link handoff boundary to the reverse link handoff boundary. A system constant is chosen which defines the product of the received power and the transmitted pilot power at every base station. The reverse link power level is measured at the base station and the forward link power level is compensated for the reverse link loading to maintain the constant product. Thereby the forward link handoff boundary to the reverse link handoff boundary are aligned to the same location.

Abstract: In a data communication system capable of variable rate transmission, high rate packet data transmission improves utilization of the forward link and decreases the transmission delay. Data transmission on the forward link is time multiplexed and the base station transmits at the highest data rate supported by the forward link at each time slot to one mobile station. The data rate is determined by the largest C/I measurement of the forward link signals as measured at the mobile station. Upon determination of a data packet received in error, the mobile station transmits a NACK message back to the base station. The NACK message results in retransmission of the data packet received in error. The data packets can be transmitted out of sequence by the use of sequence number to identify each data unit within the data packets.

Abstract: In a wireless communication system ( 10 ) a method and apparatus for inhibiting data transmissions during a data service outage at the access terminal ( 16 ). The access terminal ( 16 ) transmits an outage indicator to the access network ( 12 ) prior to the outage. A data service outage may be due to a page monitor of the voice portion of the system, or to frequency searching during which the access terminal (AT) is not available to receive data. The access network ( 12 ) does not transmit data during the outage. In one embodiment, the indicator is a DRC null cover. In an alternate embodiment, the indicator is a DRC having a zero data rate.

Abstract: In one disclosed embodiment, communication between a mobile unit and a base station is performed at a data transfer rate selected from, for example, a finite set of HDR data transfer rates. Meanwhile, the mobile unit continually computes a moving average of the data transfer rates. The mobile unit also ascertains a supportable data rate for receiving data. The supportable data rate can be selected from a finite set of HDR data transfer rates. In order to maintain the moving average of the data transfer rate within a specified range, the mobile unit transmits maximum data rate requests or null data requests to the base station. The maximum data rates requested by the mobile unit are equal to or lower than the supportable data rate.

Abstract: A method of supervising on the forward link in a high data rate system is disclosed, wherein a base station transmits to an access terminal on a forward traffic channel only when the base station has data to send to the access terminal. Each access terminal generates periodic data rate measurements based on the received forward link signal. Each access terminal then minimizes the period in which it transmits on the reverse link without being power-controlled by turning off its transmitted based on the data rate measurements.

Abstract: A first network access point receives a first wireless link message from a first user terminal. The first wireless link message identifies the first user terminal. The first network access point or other system entity assigns an IP address to the first user terminal for use as a temporary mobile station identifier. The first network access point or other system entity installs a route for the IP address to a controller. The first network access point forwards a wireless link message to the user terminal specifying the IP address. The first or a second network access point receives another wireless link message from the first user terminal in which the first user terminal is identified with the IP address. The first or second network access point parses the message to determine the IP address and creates at least one standard IP packet designating the IP address specified in the message. The first or second network access point forwards the message to a router which routes the packet according to the IP address.

Abstract: A mobile user terminal 402 accesses a packet data network 450 through one or more of several network access points 404-412. One or more control points 432-440 determines which network access point or points the user terminal is to access. Control may be retained in the current control point, or transferred to another control point, whenever it is convenient. There are preferably several routers, each having an associated home agent 418-420 which determines which foreign agents need to be accessed on behalf of each user terminal. Abstract: A method and apparatus for rapidly assigning traffic channels to a plurality of mobile stations in a wide area high-speed packet data cellular communication system. Mobile stations transmit access probes on randomly selected access channels to selected base stations to initiate traffic channel assignments. The access probe comprises a pilot preamble, a traffic channel request, and a pilot/data request channel (DRC). The pilot preamble allows the selected base station to easily detect the access probe transmission. The traffic channel request includes data that identifies the mobile station. Immediately after transmitting the traffic channel request, the mobile station begins communicating with the base station on both the forward and reverse communication links. The selected base station immediately supervises the mobile station's transmission power. The mobile station selects from a group of available power control sub-channels. The mobile station selects an available channel and an associated power control sub-channel from the list.
