    Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for extending the protocol synchronization period between a PPP client and a PPP server, wherein the PPP server is located on a wireless communication device. In one aspect, the PPP server generates and sends an IPCP Configure-Nak message to the PPP client whenever the PPP client sends an IPCP Configure-Request message, wherein an arbitrary non-zero value is deliberately sent as the primary DNS address, the secondary DNS address, the primary WINS address, or the secondary WINS address is sent in the IPCP Configure-Nak message. The IP address is deliberately omitted from the IPCP Configure-Nak message.

Test parameters values may be proposed, accepted or rejected, and negotiated. Test data for a channel is generated based on a defined data pattern or a pseudo-random number generator. Sufficient test data may be generated based on the generator for a test interval, stored to a buffer, and thereafter retrieved from a particular section of the buffer to form data block(s) for each "active" frame. The traffic channel may be tested using discontinuous transmission. A two-state Markov chain determines whether or not to transmit test data for each frame. The average frame activity and average burst length are defined by selecting the probabilities for transitioning between the ON/OFF states of the Markov chain, which may be driven by a second generator.

    Abstract: Techniques for managing resources at a wireless device are described. In one aspect, the wireless device controls applications based on resource dema nds and available resources. Processing demands by the applications may be m onitored, and at least one of the applications may be controlled based on th e processing demands and a maximum processing capacity of a processing unit executing the applications. A data application may be controlled by reducing the amount of data exchanged by the application when high processing demand s are detected, and vice versa. In another aspect, the wireless device varie s resource capacity to match resources demands. The processing capacity of t he processing unit may be adjusted based on the processing demands. Higher c lock frequency may be selected for the processing unit when the processing d emands exceed a high threshold, and lower clock frequency may be selected wh en processing demands fall below a low threshold.
