Abstract: A method of manufacturing a helical antenna having a substrate (406), the method comprising providing a series of holes (2230) in the substrate (406) and positioning the substrate (406) to engage a support element (2310). The support element (2310) has a series of teeth (2312) adapted to mate with the holes and extending radially outward from an outer surface of the support element. The teeth are arranged so that on rotation of the support element (2310) about its major axis, the substrate (406) is wrapped around the support element (2310). In preferred embodiments, the teeth (2312) and holes (2230) are arranged such that prior to rotation of the support element (2310), at least one of the teeth (2312) mates with a corresponding at least one of the holes (2230) and upon rotation, at least one additional tooth (2312) mates with a corresponding at least one additional hole (2230).

The coupled multi-segment helical antenna includes radiator portion having a plurality of helically wound radiators extending from one end of the radiator portion to the other end of the radiator portion. Each radiator is made up of a set of two or more segments. A first segment extends in a helical fashion from the first end of the radiator portion toward the second end of the radiator portion. The second segment extends in a helical fashion from the second end of the radiator portion toward the first end of the radiator portion, wherein a portion of the first radiator segment is in proximity with a portion of the second radiator segment such that the first and second radiator segments are electromagnetically coupled to one another.

Abstract: A dual-band helical antenna provides operation in two frequency bands. The dual-band helical antenna includes two single-band antennas (1304, 1308), each having a feed network (1804, 1808), a ground plane (412) opposite the feed network, and a set of one or more radiators (104A to 104D) extending from feed network. A tab (1504) extends from the feed network of one of the antennas which provides a feed for that antenna. The tab (1504) also provides a path for current to flow from the radiators of the second antenna along the axis of the second antenna to thereby increase the energy radiated in the directions perpendicular to the axis. The ground plane of one antenna is used as a shorting ring for the other antenna.
