    Abstract: A method and an apparatus for recovery of particular bits in a frame are disclosed. An origination station forms a frame structure with groups of information bits of different importance. All the information bits are then protected by an outer quality metric. Additionally, the groups of more important information bits are further protected by an inner quality metric; each group having a corresponding quality metric. The frame is then transmitted to a destination station. The destination station decodes the received frame and decides, first in accordance with the outer quality metric, whether the frame has been correctly received, or whether the frame is erased. If the frame has been declared erased, the destination station attempts to recover the groups of more important information bits in accordance with the corresponding inner quality metrics.

    Abstract: La presente invencion es un metodo y un sistema novedosos y mejorados para comunicar un cuadro de informacion de acuerdo a un formato de transmision discontinuo. En la presente invencion, se presentan cuatro metodos para transmitir cuadros de datos a un octavo de velocidad en los cuales la mitad del cuadro esta desactivado y los datos restantes son transmitidos a una energia de transmision normal para lograr las metas anteriormente mencionadas. Ademas, un sistema de control de potencia identifica los bits de control de potencia del enlace de ida que han sido desactivados por la estacion remota (50) e inhibe el ajuste de la energia de transmision en respuesta a esa identificacion.

    Abstract: The invention provides a system and method for testing signal transmission quality within a digital communication system and may be incorporated within a digital cellular communication system in which information is exchanged over spread spectrum communication channels. A test sequence of digital data transmitted over the communication channel is received at a receiving station, within which is also generated a replica of the test sequence of digital data. The accuracy of transmission over the communication channel is then determined by comparing the replica of the test sequence of digital data to the test sequence of data received over the communication channel. The invention allows the test sequence of digital data to be transmitted at one of a set of known data rates, with the received station being disposed to identify the data rate associated with each test sequence of digital data. In order to simulate the transmission of, for example, voice data, the system may be configured such that each test sequence of digital data is generated in accordance with a pseudorandom process.
