    Abstract: An angle of attack sensor (10) includes a housing (28), a heated chassis (24) positioned at least partially within the housing (28) and defining a pocket (32), a mounting plate (12) positioned adjacent the heated chassis (24) and having a circular opening (16), an external surface facing away from the housing (28), and an internal surface facing toward the housing (28), and a vane assembly (17) extending through the circular opening (16) of the mounting plate (12). The vane assembly (17) includes a vane (18) extending from a root (46) to a tip (48) and a vane base (20) connected to the root (46) of the vane (18) and positioned within the pocket (37) of the heated chassis (24) such that the vane base (20) is offset inwardly from the external surface toward the housing (28).

    Abstract: The bearings (32,34) of aircraft angle of attack (AOA) vanes (18) are susceptible to lightning strike damage, which causes fluting on the inner and outer races (40a,b,42a,b) of the bearings (32,34) and causes the bearings (32,34) to generate friction, noise, and vibrations.
