Loop current output circuitry is configured to apply an output current to the two wire process control loop. Loop current verification circuitry is coupled to the two wire process control loop and configured to detect errors in the applied output current. At least a portion of the loop current verification circuitry is independent from the loop current output circuitry.

Such conditio ns include too much current flowing from the at least one cell (326; 442; 55 2; 652; 742; 842); the voltage of the at least one cell (326; 442; 552; 652; 742; 842) being too low; or a short circuit being generated or otherwise ob served.
