Date Aug. 4, 1994In order to control oil accidents and to prevent the oil film drifting on the water from spreading, an oil adsorber 1 is provided, in particular shaped as a barrier 2. This barrier 2 is designed in two parts. Both cells 9, 10 are completely filled with glass fiber material or with corresponding fiber mats 11, 12. The glass fibers 28, 30 of the top cell 9 are waterproofed, by an appropriate coating, whereas the fibers of the bottom cell 10 are not treated, so that they absorb water 6. In both cases epoxy resin or a synthetic resin having the same or similar properties are used, so that a long service life is achieved with optimum solidity and design possibilities. The oil adsorbers 1 thus obtained may be used both as barriers 2 and as flat suction elements, for example to clear bilge waters from ships 3. It is also conceivable to use the flat or funnel-shaped elements for collecting components of an aqueous solution, for example.

Abstract: A tank for transporting and/or storing dangerous substances, and particularly petrol, oil, etc. which pollute the environment (e.g. liquefied gases) if they escape, has a rounded closed body fitted with filling and emptying gear. It contains an internal glass fibre system to confine movements of the tank contents. The fibres used have been treated to render them hydrophobic and with a binder which does not react with the contents. The glass fibres are coated with an epoxy and/or methylene resin, hardener, methyl polysiloxane or silicone methyl resin and dust-laying agent binder which is sprayed on either in the form of its individual components or as an emulsion produced from them. The binder can also contain polyester resin and starch.

Abstract: Glass or mineral fibres are produced for insulating materials from liquid glass which is pressed through a number of perforations in a revolving plate. Before or while the fibres are cooled they are sprayed with a (6-8%) silicone binder substance which renders them hydrophobic and with a long chain type starch. They are finally dried and formed into sheets or rollers. An emulsion of silicone resin, silicone oil, a dust-laying agent and the starch (polysaccharides) is produced, this is atomised at 18-200 deg.C and then sprayed on the glass fibres. The emulsion pref. contains another resin, silane catalyst and epoxy, methylone or polyester or similar.

Abstract: Provided as a rescue means, in particular a life belt or inflatable life-raft, is an annular basic body which consists of glass wool and is provided with an outer skin. The glass fibres are coated with a binder of, in particular, epoxy resin and silicon as well as other constituents, these constituents being emulsified in advance. This produces a very stable framework, so that such rescue means can be used over long operational periods and advantageously retain their load-bearing capacity and consequently their function, even if for example the outer skin is partially destroyed or the entire rescue means should even be partially destroyed. Such a rescue means can advantageously be used additionally or else simultaneously for tackling oil spills or for catching escaping oil, because this oil passes through the underskin and accumulates on the glass fibres, where it remains until it is released again therefrom by appropriate pressing operations or the application of heat.

Abstract: In the prodn. molten glass is used together with starch as a hydrophobic bonding agent and silicon spray. The mixt. is dried and shaped as plates or rolls. A long chain starch is used and is heated as a liq. to 50-60 deg.C, then held at this temp. until spraying, while stirred. The bonding agent is added at 6-8%, and the starch and silicon are sprayed separately on the glass fibres. Also claimed is an assembly with a feed ring (11) for the starch and a separate feed ring (10) for Si. The starch feed ring (11), has jets (14) with enlarged jet openings and scraping edges. The premixing container is heated, and the feeds (15) to the jets are thermally insulated. The starch is heated during its feed as far as the jets. The bonding materials is composed of 94-96% silicon and 6-5% starch, as 6.5% starch and silicon bonding. The glass fibre material, sprayed with bonding material, is dried and baked at 150-190 deg.C and pref. 180 deg.C. A sieve with openings matching the jets (14) is between the premixing container and the feed channel, and a density meter is shortly before the feed ring (11). A further feed ring delivers a vinyl resin and silicon bonder, with smaller jets (14). The starch jets (14) are shrouded against the water feed ring (9). USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for mfg. insulating glass fibre material from molten glass. The material is free of vinyl, as a glass wool, which has the required vol. density, and can be produced in long runs.
