Abstract: A system for communicating information between a detection device and a wireless device comprises a detection device (206, 207), a communication member (114a, 202) coupled to the detection device, a radio interface unit (400) in communication with the communication member and a wireless device (102, 104) in radio communication with the radio interface unit, such that the detection device communicates information between the wireless device via the radio interface unit. The detection device is adapted to monitor a condition related to a power system. The information includes status of coupling of the communication member and the detection device. The detection device is a power system device such as a faulted circuit indicator.

Abstract: Abstract A method of communicating between a radio interface unit and a portable terminal is provided. Abstract: Abstract A method of preserving battery life in a radio interface unit is provided. The radio interface unit is in communication with a detection device and has a radio for communicating with a portable terminal by transmitting and receiving radio 5 frequency signals therebetween. The method comprises the steps of: keeping the radio of the radio interface unit in a slow sleep mode most of the time; periodically waking the radio of the radio interface unit up to determine if a request command is received from the portable terminal; setting the radio of the radio interface unit to a faster sleep mode if the detection device senses a select 10 condition; and waking the radio of the radio interface unit up more frequently to determine if a request command is received from the portable terminal when the radio is set in the faster sleep mode.
