    Abstract: Disclosed is a method for reducing the moisture content of a paper web in a papermaking process from in the range of 10 % to 32 % dry to the range of 33 % to 50 % dry wherein the embryonic web (14) is supported on a knuckled through drier fabric and lightly pressed between the knuckled through drier fabric and a capillary membrane (12) of a capillary dewatering roll. The capillary membrane (12) has capillary pores therethrough which have a substantially straight through, non-tortuous path with a pore aspect ratio of from about 2 to about 20. A vacuum is drawn within the capillary dewatering roll which is not greater than the negative capillary suction pressure of the capillary pores.

    Abstract: A multi-layered wiper (10, 20, 30) and method of making it, the wiper (10, 20, 30) having at least one strong surface region of fibers (12, 36) having a predominate length of less than one-fourth inch and havig bonding material disposed therein in a fine spaced apart pattern, the areas in the strong surface region (12, 36) where the bonding material is disposed being finely creped and at least one inner core region of fibers (14, 34) having a predominate length of less than one-fourth inch and generally having less fiber concentration than the surface region (12, 36) and at least one interior strong region of fibers (16, 32) having a predominate length of less than one-fourth inch and having a greater fiber concentration than in the inner core region (14, 34) and having bonding material disposed therein in a fine spaced apart pattern to bond the fibers in the interior strong region (16, 32) together into a strong network, the bonding material in the interior strong region (16, 32) being substantially unconnected to the bonding material in the strong surface region (12, 36) and a strengthening layer (18) comprising a web of fibrous material having a minimum wet tensile strength of about 16 ounces per inch measured in any direction, and being substantially free of apertures larger than 0.02 square inches, said strengthening layer (18) being bonded to the exterior surface (13, 31) of one of the interior strong regions (16, 32).

    Abstract: A method for making a fibrous web and the wiper (71) made thereby which exhibits improved dry, wet and solvent tensile strengths as well as superior resistance to wet collapse. The web is formed from a furnish of lignocellulosic fibers and bi-component fibers, the web having a basis weight in the range of about 20 lbs per ream to about 60 lbs per ream. Bonding material (75) is applied in at least one pattern to each surface of the web, and the web is creped at least twice from a creping surface. Lignocellulosic fibers make up from about 50 % to about 94 % by weight of the web. Bi-component fibers of polyester and polyethylene make up from about 6 % to about 50 % by weight of said fibrous web. The fibrous web has an undulating disposition due to creping and has first and second strong, abrasion resistant, laminate-like surface regions interconnected by an absorbent central de-densified core region containing tack-bonded bi-component fibers.

    Abstract: A manifold (88) for use with a hand held pump spray device (10) allowing the spray head (12) to draw simultaneously from two separate reservoirs (16, 18) containing two different fluids such that the spray head (12) raises a mixture of the two fluids in a predetermined ratio. The manifold (88) includes at least one ball check valve arrangement (82, 116, 120) in the suction line (104) to the chemical concentrate reservoir (18), the ball check valve (116) being normally biased to a closed position. The check valve (116) prevents the pumping of the concentrate when the diluent reservoir (16) is spent and further prevents cross contamination between the two fluids in the two reservoirs (16, 18) due to syphoning.

    Abstract: Paper products such as bathroom tissue, facial tissue, napkins and paper towels are made from recycled newsprint fibers still containing printing ink oils. These products exhibit premium level qualities in terms of softness, bulk, and flexibility. The novel process selectively treats newsprint fibers and contaminants in a way that makes the fibers feel softer and enhances papermachine operation with this type of furnish, thereby permitting higher product quality levels than previously possible with newsprint fibers.
