[Also in Division H1] A grid in a colour television tube comprises a number of parallel elongate elements 13 shaped to provide apertures 17 which are wide in the centre and taper at the ends, the apertures having a width in microns given by the equation 122 - αx 2 - #y 2 where x and y are space coordinates and α and # are constants; this reduces microphony, increases the luminance at the centre of the screen, and reduces the effect of the earth's magnetic field. In manufacture, the apertures 17 are made by photo-etching a stainless steel plate which is provided at its edges with a pair of slits 14 opposite every third aperture 17. The tabs 16 formed between the slits 14 are gripped between opposed chucks (Fig. 2, not shown) individually tensioned to produce a desired pattern of pre-tension in the grid elements 13 to reduce the effect of thermal expansion. Support bars are welded to the plate, after which the tabs 16 projecting beyond the support bars are cut off, and the edges of the plate may be cut off at the wide slot 15 provided at each side of the plate. In one example the pitch of the apertures 17 is 600 microns, and the phosphor strips of the screen arranged behind the grid are 210 microns wide.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To arrange a fluorescent character display tube such that electron beams are extended towards a peripheral wall, fluorescent area is increased and space between emitter segments narrows so as to improve resolution by making a partition wall of a separator electrode in the portion adjacent to the peripheral wall of a tube higher than other wall faces. CONSTITUTION:Among the wall faces of a separator electrode 19, a projected walls 19B adjacent to a peripheral wall 13 of a fluorescent character display panel are made higher than other partition walls. Electron beams are thus extended towards the wall 13 and emitter segments can be provided in the portion adjacent to the wall 13. Therefore, space between emitter segments can narrows and resolution is improved in case if displaying on a large screen.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To achieve increased luminous efficiency by providing a metallic reflection film having a flat surface between an index phosphor layer and color phosphor stripes. CONSTITUTION:A metallic reflection film 17 having a flat surface is provided between an index phosphor layer 16 and color phosphor stripes. When the fluo rescent screen is scanned by an electron beam from an electron gun structure 19, the index phosphor layer 16 is excited with the electron beam transmitted by the metallic reflection film 17 to emit light. But, the emitted light is shielded by a light-shielding layer 15 and only light emitted from the areas 16i of the layer 15 becomes incident upon a light-receiving plate 21 as index light through a screen panel 12 to act as phosphor stripes (I). The light emitted near the screen panel 12 becomes incident upon the light-receiving plate 21 directly through the screen panel 12. The light emitted near a front panel 11 excluding light transmitted by the metallic reflection film 17 is reflected by the film 17 and then becomes incident upon the light-receiving plate 21 efficiently through the screen panel 12.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make a CRT easy to produce and suitable for mass production by forming it with a screen panel, a front panel and a funnel. CONSTITUTION:A panel section 2 is constituted with a front panel 2a on the front side uniformly divided in two at the vertical face and a screen panel 2b with a fluorescent screen 3. At this time, the front 2a and screen panel 2b have a cross section with nearly a U-shape and curved toward one direction and symmetrical on the left and right with respect to a vertical plane passing through the a-a line. Two of the same glass panel 2a are combined to form an outer wall shape symmetrial with respect to two planes crossing at a right angle respectively and constitute a female mold. Melted glass is depressed to two planes with glass panels 2a combined to cross at a righ angle respectively so as to form a predetermined symmetrical shape, glass press-molded, cut off with a glass cutter to obtain two glass panels. Both end faces are frit-sealed to form the panel section 2, and the end face with the funnel section 4 is welded by a frit seal.
