    Abstract: PURPOSE:To increase the resolution by arranging display picture elements in a number greater than the number of lines of X-Y matrix, and finely deflecting the electron beam heading to the fluorescent surface by means of electrostatic deflection ahead the fluorescent surface. CONSTITUTION:Electron shower taken out of a cathode 1 is density modulated by an X-Y modulation electrode 2 selectively and an electron beam heading to a specified fluorescent substance trio 6T is deflected in the X direction by a deflecting electrode 4. Electron beam taken out by the X-Y modulation electrode 2 about an appropriate fluorescent substance trio 6T consisting of an R, G, and B is further scanned by fine deflection about each fluorescent substance R, G, B in, for ex., another trio 6T. Accordingly picture elements in a number more than the number of X and Y lines of the X-Y modulation electrode 2, which enables enhanced resolution.

Furthermore, the potential EG of a grid electrode, the potential ET1 of the cathode holder 11 whose potential difference with the grid electrode is smaller, and the potential EK2 of the other cathode end 152 neighboring the holder 11 are made to have the potential inclination EG>ET1 and EK2, and the ratio of EG, ET1, and EK2 is selected to have the ratio responding to the ratio of the distances of them. As a result, the unevenness of the brightness can be eliminated.

Thereafter, a phosphor is applied by electrocoating on the electrode 12, and when a panel is formed in a side of a fluorescent surface 10, just before it, the conductive layer 14 as an electrode having a converge function is constituted. Then, without a large influence by an inflow of an electron beam, the electron beam is emitted efficiently toward the phosphor applying part 15. Thus, contrast ratio and a utilization factor of the beam can be improved.

Electron beam from the electron gun intersects the front panel 1F and the back panel 1B at right angles and is introduced between the electrode structure 7 and the vertical deflection electrode 3 with the beam cross section along the horizontal scanning direction in the shape of a band or a line. This prevents nonuniformity in the brightness of the display surface and provides uniform picture quality even with a large-sized display by the movement of a dynamic focusing lens synchronized with the vertical scanning and forming of a focusing lens.
