Abstract: 1,065,963. Colour television tubes. SONY CORPORATION. Oct. 30, 1963 [Oct. 31, 1962], No. 42947/63. Heading H1D. [Also in Divisions H3 and H4] A colour television receiver, Fig. 1, utilizes a modified form of chromatron cathode-ray tube 3 in which the phosphor strips are arranged in a regularly recurring red, green and blue sequence as shown in Fig. 2 and the switching grids, which are disposed adjacent alternate colour strips, are connected together in three groups 10a, 10b, 10c. The tube gun 7 is supplied with a composite N.T.S.C. type of signal comprised of a luminance component Y and a chrominance sub-carrier component C s whilst the three groups of grids are energized by three phasedisplaced sine wave signals Sa, Sb, Sc from a circuit 6 driven by an oscillator 5 which is synchronized at a sub-carrier frequency by the synchronizing " bursts." Operation proceeds as illustrated in Fig. 2 at A-F for 60 degrees phase advances of the sine wave signals. The electron beam is directed in sequence to the red, green and blue phosphors in step with the representation of the corresponding colours by the chrominance signal as shown at A, C and E in Fig. 2, but in passing from one colour to the next the beam impinges simultaneously on phosphors of all three colours to produce white light as shown at B, D and F. The tube thus reproduces in the sequence R, W, G, W, B, W, R &c. A signal P at three times sub-carrier frequency is produced in a circuit 20 and applied to the tube gun 7 to reduce the beam current during the transitions from one colour to the next. The amplitude of the signal is modulated as described in Specification 1,056,437 by the output of a detector 19 supplied with the chrominance signal C s so that the amplitude is a maximum for saturated colours. The tube may be utilized for producing a black-and-white picture by disconnecting the signals from grid 10a, 10b, 10c so that the electron beam is not subject to deflection and impinges strips of all three colours. In order to reproduce the hues accurately in response to the N.T.S.C. signal the three switching signals Sa, Sb, Sc are arranged in accordance with the invention to differ in phase by 138 degrees, 106 degrees and 116 degrees. The operation shown in Fig. 2 where the phase differences are equal at 120 degrees is for purpose of illustration only and does not form part of the invention.
