Abstract: A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery in which, using Li x MO (where M is at least one of transition metals, preferably Co or Ni, and 0.05 & X & 1.10) as a positive electrode active material, the charge and discharge of the battery are performed by doping and dedoping lithium. The battery is provided with a means for shutting off current, which operates with the increase of the pressure of the inside of the battery. The means for shutting off current is operated surely by adding lithium carbonate to the positive electrode active material and by covering a part of the surface of the positive electrode with lithium carbonate. The quantity of lithium carbonate is 0.5-15 wt %, and the specific surface area is preferably 0.1 m /g or more.

SOLUTION: The positive active material is made by forming a covering layer containing the composite oxide in at least a part of the surface of particles containing the composite oxide. The particles contain a first composite oxide having layer structure and mainly comprising lithium and nickel. The covering layer contains a second composite oxide mainly comprising lithium and titanium. The weight ratio of the first composite oxide to the second composite oxide is 96:4 to 65:35. The average particle size of the positive active material is 5 μm to 20 μm.
