Abstract: Roofing tiles made of a cement mortar mixt. are improved in that they contain hydrated Ca silicate formed from the free lime and SiO2 in the mortar mixt. during or directly after setting. Conversion of the free lime into Ca silicate avoids the discoloration due to weathering normally associated with mortar tiles; the tiles have mechanical properties as good as or better than those of the untreated lime-contg. tiles, and better frost resistance than ceramic tiles. The conversion of the lime into Ca silicate can be effected by treating the tiles (before or after setting) with steam at >100 degrees C (pref. 100-250 degrees C) at elevated pressure (pref. 14-18 bar) in an autoclave. The mortar mixt. pref. contains s small excess of fine sand, esp. quartz. sand.
