Abstract: The invention comprises (1) a -amino-#z-oenantholactam other than when prepared by the process disclosed in the parent Specification, and (2) the preparation of a -amino-o -lactams by reducing with hydrogen an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt of the aciform of an a -nitro-o -lactam. Suitable watersoluble salts are formed by dissolving the a -nitro-o -lactam in aqueous ammonia and optionally adding thereto at least the equivalent amount of a corresponding a -amino-o -lactam. Sodium, potassium, aniline and other amine salts may also be used. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of hydrogenation catalysts and at elevated temperatures. Examples describe the preparation of a -amino-e -caprolactam and a -amino-#z-oenantholactam.
