Abstract: Lubricating-oils are rendered stable to the high temperatures of internal-combustion engines by dissolving therein alkyl diphenol polysulphides, -diselenides or -ditellurides or polymers of diaryl sulphides -selenides, or -tellurides in which each aryl radicle contains an OH group. Di-tertiary amyl diphenol disulphide dissolved in a 0,2 per cent concentration in a highly refined S.A.E.20 petroleum lubricating oil of V.I.90 improves the oil as demonstrated by the Sligh test, the cone test, the lead tolerance test and the rate of oxidation. Compounds of the general formula in which R represents an alkyl group of preferably 2-8 carbon p atoms, R1 and R11 represent the same alkyl groups as R or other alkyl groups or H, y represents an integer of 1-6 and n and n1 represent an integer 2-4 are included. The compounds may be added alone or in company with dyes, soaps, pour point depressants, sludge dispersers, oxidation inhibitors, thickeners, V.I. improvers, oiliness agents, resins, rubbers, fatty oils, sulphurized or thickened fatty oils, extreme pressure lubricants, organo-metallic compounds, bright stocks, volotized fats, mineral oils or waxes, or colloidal solids such as graphite and zinc oxide. The alkyl diphenol polysulphides may be prepared by reacting alkyl phenols with S2Cl2 in the presence of an alkyl halide as diluent, e.g. C2H4Cl2. Alkyl phenols suitable for the reaction are obtained by condensing phenols with olefines with 2-8 C atoms, such as the olefines obtained by cracking petroleum oils or waxes. Specifications 463,763 and 466,075 are referred to.ALSO:Lubricating-oils are rendered stable to the high temperatures of internal-combustion engines by dissolving therein alkyl diphenol polysulphides, -diselenides or -ditellurides, or polymers of diaryl sulphides, -selenides or tellurides, in which each aryl radicle contains an OH group.
