A method of preparing N-phosphonomethylglycine comprising; (a) reacting N-hydroxymethyl haloacetamide with a chlorinating agent, preferably thionyl chloride to form N-chloromethyl haloacetamide; (b) reacting N-chloromethyl haloacetamide with a phosphite to form N- haloacetylaminomethyl phosphonate; (c) reacting the phosphonate with derivative of haloacetic acid to form N-haloacyl-N-(cyanomethyl or carboalkoxymethyl) phosphonate; and (d) hydrolyzing this later phosphonate to yield N-phosphonomethylglycine.

A process for the production of N-phosphonomethylglycine characterised in that it comprises:
(a) reacting a 1,3.5-tricarboalkoxymethylhexahydro-1,3,5-triazine corresponding to the following general formula: wherein R represents an aliphatic or aromatic group; with an acyl chloride corresponding to the following general formula: wherein X represents chlorine, bromine or iodine; and R 1 represents an aliphatic or aromatic group; to form the N-carboalkoxymethyl-N-halomethyl amide of the acyl chloride corresponding to the following general formula: wherein X, R and R 1 are as defined above; (b) reacting the resulting amide with a phosphite corresponding to the following general formula: wherein R 2 and R 3 both represent aromatic groups or both represent aliphatic groups: and R 4 represents an aliphatic group or an aikati metal; to form a phosphonats compound corresponding to the following general formula; wherein R, R', R 2 and R 3 are as defined above; and (c) hydrolyzing the resulting phosphonate to yield N-phosphonomethylglycine is disciosed.

Herbicidally active thiolcarbamates are employed in combination with certain allyl amine salts of thiocarbamic acid compounds having the formula wherein
R 4 and R 5 are independently selected from the group consisting of allyl, alkyl substituted allyl, and lower alkyl groups having from about 1 to about 6 carbon atoms; R 6 and R 7 are independently selected from the group consisting of allyl, alkyl substituted allyl, and lower alkyl groups having from about 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and X is oxygen or sulfur wherein at least one of R 4 and R 5 and at least one of R 6 and R 7 is an allyl group. In a typical application, the allyl amine salt of thiocarbamic acid compound is included in sufficient quantity to lessen the rate of soil degradation of the thiolcarbamate. As a result, the herbicidal effectiveness of the thiolcarbamate is enhanced and prolonged, rendering single application of the herbicide effective over a longer period of time.

Thus, an improved production for a valuable herbicide is provided.
