Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the objective substance useful as an intermediate for agricultural chemicals and drugs by distilling away methyl amine from a reaction mixture solution of 2,6-dichloropyridine and an aqueous solution of methylamine and extracting the objective substance with a specific organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:A reaction mixture solution of 2,6-dichloropyridine and an aqueous solution of methylamine is heated with a dehydrohalogenating agent (e.g. caustic soda) to distill away methylamine. Then, the prepared reaction solution is extracted with an organic solvent selected from aliphatic hydrocarbons, alicyclic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, ethers and ketones inactive to 2-chloro-6-methylaminopyridine at 0-90 deg.C to give the objective substance. The organic solvent has =0.2 that of 2-chloro-6-methylaminopyridine.
