Abstract: A method (10) for autonomously determining an elemental composition of an ore involves an initial step (12) of conveying a stream of the ore past a moisture measurement system and an analyser. At step (14) the moisture measurement system operates to obtain moisture content data of the ore. As the stream of ore subsequently passes the analyser, the analyser at step (16) operates to obtain raw elemental composition data of the ore. The moisture content data and the raw elemental composition data are provided as inputs to compensation step (18). In the compensation step (18) one or more data compensation or correction methods or techniques are performed to provide moisture corrected elemental composition data of the ore. This compensated data is provided at step (20).

Abstract: An in-situ sampling and analysis system 10 is supported by a drill rig 12. The system 10 incorporates a frame 26 which carries equipment capable of sampling and analysing drill cuttings produced during drilling. This equipment includes a drill cutting handling system 28 and an emission spectrometer 30. The frame 26 is moveable to an operational position which facilitates the acquiring samples of the drill cuttings and conducting an elemental analysis of the cuttings. Prior to the drill rig 12 being trammed to the desired location for drilling of a further hole, the frame 26 is elevated with respect to the operational position to retract the equipment from ground level. The sampling of drill cuttings and determination of the composition of a mineral body is performed in real time simultaneously with the drilling.

Abstract: A method of calibrating an emission spectrometer (10) having a detector (11) capable of detecting spectral components of incident radiation, and a measurement optical path (28) which directs an energy beam (26) to a sample (20) and radiation emitted by the sample when irradiated by the energy beam to the radiation detector (11). The method comprises directing radiation of known spectral characteristic along an alternate path to the detector (11). The detector (11) to detects spectral characteristics of the radiation and makes a comparison with the known spectral characteristics. Drift data is determined on a basis of any variation between the detected and known spectral characteristics. The drift data is stored and subsequently used to adjust detected spectral characteristics of a sample in the measurement optical path (28) produce a drift calibrated output spectral analysis of the sample.
