Abstract: A separation membrane has a porous substrate and a porous resin layer on at least one surface of the porous substrate and the porous resin layer contains a resin. Part of the resin permeates through the porous substrate to form a composite layer. At least one of the following relationships (1) and (2) is satisfied: (1) the porous resin layer has an average pore size in the range of 0.01 to 0.2 mu m and a standard variation of the pore size of 0.1 mu m or less at the surface, and (2) the porous resin layer has macrovoids having short diameters of 0.05xA or more wherein A represents the thickness of the porous substrate, and the rejection of micro particles having an average particle size of 0.9 mu m is at least 90%. This separation membrane can be readily produced by a method for making a separation membrane according to the present invention.

Abstract: A separating film for sewage and waste water having a high permeability, har d to be clogged, and preventing the porous resin layer thereof from being separated from the porous base material thereof, comprising the porous base material and the porous resin layer formed on the surface of the porous base material, wherein a part of the resin forming the porous resin layer is intruded into the porous base material to form a combined layer with the porous base material, characterized in that the requirements specified in items (1) and/or (2) below can be satisfied. (1) The average diameter of the pores in the surface of the porous resin layer must be within the range of 0.01 to 0.2 .mu.m, and the standard deviation of the pore diameters must be 0.1 .mu.m or below. (2) Where the thickness of the porous base material is (A), macro voids of 0.05 x (A) or more in minor axis must be present in the porous resin layer, and the exclusion ratio of particulates of 0.9 .mu.m in average grain size must be at least 90% or higher.
