Abstract: 943,067. Cold and heat retaining vessels. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Jan. 15, 1962, No. 13770/62. Heading F4U. Biological specimens, e.g. bulls' semen, are stored in a double-walled vacuum insulated container 10 having a top access opening 16 in which an actuating member 18 is disposed, rotation of the said member being transmitted by drive means to a conveyer assembly 56 which is located in the lower part of the container and is provided with receptacles for receiving specimens 24. The actuating member 18 comprises a cylindrical portion surmounted by a calibrated plate 40 and is provided with a groove 43 in which a tab 42 engages so that rotation of the member is transmitted via a wheel 20, a chain 33, a sprocket wheel 34 and a rod 32 to a further sprocket wheel 36 which drives the conveyer 56. The latter is guided by idling sprockets 48, 50, 52 and 54 in the path shown in Fig. 2 whereby the conveyer passes directly beneath the access opening at one point in its path. The container is provided with one or more partitions 35 to define compartments for housing solid refrigerant and the vacuum space may include solid insulation.
