Abstract:
One exemplary embodiment of this disclosure relates to a transfer molding assembly. The assembly includes a die having a molding cavity interconnected with a reservoir. The assembly further includes a heater operable to heat the die, and a load plate configured to move under its own weight to transfer material from the reservoir into the molding cavity.
Abstract:
A ceramic component includes a porous structure that has fibers and a coating on the fibers. A ceramic material is within pores of the porous structure. A glass or glass/ceramic material is within pores of the porous structure, and one of the ceramic material or the glass or glass/ceramic material is within internal residual porosity of the other of the ceramic material or the glass or glass/ceramic material.
Abstract:
A method of making an ceramic article according to an exemplary embodiment of this disclosure, among other possible things includes arranging fiber plies into a preform, inserting one or more sacrificial springs to the preform, infiltrating the preform with a matrix material to form an article, and thermally degrading the one or more sacrificial springs to form cooling holes. A ceramic article and a gas turbine engine component are also disclosed.
Abstract:
A gas turbine engine component includes a gas turbine engine component body formed of a ceramic matrix composite material having at least one fastener integrally formed with the gas turbine engine component body as a single-piece structure. The gas turbine engine component body initially comprises a rigidized preform structure formed from a polymer based material. The at least one fastener connects the gas turbine engine component body to an engine support structure.
Abstract:
A method of forming an integral fastener for a ceramic matrix composite component comprises the steps of forming a fiber preform with an opening, forming a fiber fastener, inserting the fiber fastener into the opening, and infiltrating a matrix material into the fiber preform and fiber fastener to form a ceramic matrix composite component with an integral fastener. A gas turbine engine is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A composite component includes a fiber array, a plurality of platelets bridging between fiber filaments of the fiber array and rigidizing the fiber array, and a resin-based phase disposed within voids of the fiber array. A method of making a composite component is also disclosed.
Abstract:
The heat exchanger (10) includes a ceramic matrix composite (12) (stable at temperatures up to 1,650° C.) surrounding and defining a hot fluid conduit (14). A hardenable material (18) having a high thermal conductivity is formed into a heat transfer layer (16) surrounding the ceramic matrix composite (12). A metal pipe (20) is coextensive with the heat transfer layer (16) and defines at least a portion (22) of at least one cool fluid passage (24, 34, 54) defined adjacent to and in heat exchange relationship with the heat transfer layer (16) so that a fluid passing through the cool fluid passage (24, 34, 54) absorbs heat passing through the heat transfer layer (16) from the hot fluid passing through the hot fluid conduit (14).
