Abstract: Abstract A particle detection system, such as an active video smoke detection system, includes at least one illumination means for directing a beam of radiation through at least part 5 of the air volume being monitored, an image sensor is positioned to capture images of at least part of a beam from illumination means; and means to analyse the captured images to detect the presence of particles within the volume. At least 29 different aspects are described for improving the sensitivity, usability, and robustness of particle detection. These include, for example, configuring illumination means to create a 10 curtain of light or a rapidly-scanned beam across the air volume, and configuring a reflector to steer or change direction of a beam reflected from illumination means.

Abstract: There is describes a filter arrangement (10) for a particle detector (12) for detecting particles in an environment. The particle detector (12) can include one or more sensors (30) for analysing fluid in a detection region to produce sensor output. The filter arrangement (30) includes structure defining flow paths, for conveying fluid from the environment towards the detection region, including a first flow path (22), which includes a filter(26), and a second flow path (24) bypassing the filter(10). There is also provided a mechanism (120B) for controlling relative flow rates of fluid through the first flow path (22) and the second flow path (24) and a controller (32) configured to receive the sensor output corresponding to at least two relative flow rates and apply logic thereto to generate an output indicative of a condition of the filter.

In the preferred form the detector (10) emits a first light beam (3614) in a first wavelength band; a second light beam (3618) in a second wavelength band; and a third light beam (3616) in a third wavelength band, wherein the first and second wavelengths bands are substantially equal and are different to the third wavelength band.
