Abstract: Methods for identifying mud motor stall events are provided herein. One method includes receiving drilling sensor data including a pressure measurement signal, calculating a smoothed pressure signal, calculating a pressure fluctuation signal, determining a pressure fluctuation distribution dataset, and calculating a set of statistical values from the pressure fluctuation distribution dataset, where the set includes a pressure fluctuation value for a selected percentile value and probability distribution parameters that characterize a selected theoretical probability distribution function. The method also includes calculating a theoretical pressure fluctuation value for another selected percentile value using the probability distribution parameters, identifying mud motor stall event(s) when a pressure measurement value from the pressure fluctuation signal is greater than the calculated pressure fluctuation value and the calculated theoretical pressure fluctuation value multiplied by a prescribed numerical value, and utilizing the identified mud motor stall event(s) to manage the borehole drilling operation.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for integrated conversion of biomass to ultimately form naphtha and/or diesel boiling range products. The integrated conversion can include an initial conversion of biomass to alcohols, such as by fermentation, followed by conversion of alcohols to olefins and then olefins to naphtha, jet, and diesel boiling range compounds, with high selectivity for formation of diesel boiling range compounds. The integrated conversion process can be facilitated by using a common catalyst for both the conversion of alcohols to olefins and the conversion of olefins to naphtha and/or diesel boiling range compounds. For example, ZSM- 48 (an MRE zeotype framework structure catalyst) can be used as the catalyst for both conversion of alcohols to olefins and for oligomerization of olefins with increased selectivity for formation of diesel boiling range products.

Abstract: Contactor structures are provided that can allow for improved heat management while reducing or minimizing the potential for contamination of process gas streams with heat transfer fluids. The contactor structures can include one or more sets of flow channels for process gas flows, such as gas flows introduced to allow adsorption of components from a gas stream or gas flows introduced to facilitate desorption of previously adsorbed components into a purge gas stream. The process gas flow channels can correspond to flow channels defined by a structural material of unitary structure. The unitary structure can correspond to the entire contactor, or the unitary structure can correspond to a monolith that forms a portion of the contactor. The contactor structures can also include one or more sets of flow channels for heat transfer fluids. The heat transfer flow channels can also be defined by the structural material of a unitary structure.

Processes for producing pitch compositions suitable for spinning into fibers from steam cracking of crude oils may comprise: steam cracking of one or more crude oils in a steam cracking zone to produce a first effluent comprising a heavy oil mixture comprising a steam cracker tar, a second effluent comprising a mixture of gaseous products and liquid products, and a third effluent comprising one or more bottoms products; pretreating and heat treating the first, second and/or third effluent to produce a pitch composition having a mesophase content from 0 vol% to 100 vol%, based on the total volume of the pitch product, an MCR in the range of about 40 wt% to about 95 wt%, and a softening point Tsp in the range of about 50°C to about 400°C.

Abstract: A method for separating classes of hydrocarbon compounds from a feed stream including a hydrocarbon mixture is disclosed. The method includes the steps of passing a feed stream through a plurality of separation units arranged in a series in any order, wherein each separation unit has an adsorbent material; and separating classes of hydrocarbon compounds from the feed stream. When one of the plurality of separation units comprises an adsorbent material that is a metal organic framework selected from a zirconium, hafnium, cerium, or titanium-based metal organic framework, then another plurality of separation units includes an adsorption material that is different from the metal organic framework. The method is conducted in a liquid phase. The method can also use a single separation unit with a continuous cyclic bed apparatus. The method can be combined with refining and downstream processes.

Abstract: Blending of polyvinylchloride (PVC) and other rigid polymers may be facilitated using lubricant compositions comprising linear alpha olefins (LAOs) or compounds derived from LAOs. PVC blending methods may comprise: combining PVC and a lubricant composition to form a mixture, and blending the mixture to form a lubricated PVC blend, in which the mixture contains an effective amount of the lubricant composition to provide a fusion temperature for the lubricated PVC blend of about 190°C or below as determined by torque rheometry at 65 rpm. The lubricant composition may comprise one or more C18+ linear alpha olefins (LAOs) having a kinematic viscosity of about 4 cSt or less at 135°C, or one or more LAO dimers formed from the one or more C18+ LAOs, the one or more LAO dimers having an internal olefin and a kinematic viscosity of about 6 cSt or less at 135°C, or reduced LAO dimers.
