Abstract:
A prosthetic knee joint includes an upper part, a lower part which is arranged pivotably to the upper part, a fastening device arranged on the upper part for a proximal prosthetic element, a fastening device arranged on the lower part for a distal prosthetic element, a four-limbed joint system with four linkages articulatedly fastened to each other, which are each pivotable to each other around a pivot axis, wherein the upper part is arranged on the joint system. The joint system may be mounted pivotably on the lower part from a starting position counter to a spring force during a stance phase flexion, and the action line of the spring force may be aligned such that a moment acting against an inflexion of the joint system is present.
Abstract:
Hybrid terrain-adaptive lower-extremity apparatus and methods that perform in a variety of different situations by detecting the terrain that is being traversed, and adapting to the detected terrain. In some embodiments, the ability to control the apparatus for each of these situations builds upon five basic capabilities: (1) determining the activity being performed; (2) dynamically controlling the characteristics of the apparatus based on the activity that is being performed; (3) dynamically driving the apparatus based on the activity that is being performed; (4) determining terrain texture irregularities (e.g., how sticky is the terrain, how slippery is the terrain, is the terrain coarse or smooth, does the terrain have any obstructions, such, as rocks) and (5) a mechanical design of the apparatus that can respond to the dynamic control and dynamic drive.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a socket system for a prosthesis. The socket system including a prosthesis socket which has a proximal opening for receiving a residual limb and a distal end and which is made, at least partially, of a first fiber-reinforced plastic. The socket system also includes an adapter element which is arranged on the distal end of the prosthesis socket and is designed in such a manner that a distal prosthesis element can be secured to the adapter element. The adapter element includes a base body which is made, at least partially, of a second fiber-reinforced plastic.
Abstract:
A swing phase control device for an artificial knee joint is disclosed. The swing phase control device has a piston-cylinder device having a piston having a first side and a second side opposite the first side, a first chamber associated with the first side of the piston; and a second chamber associated with the second side of the piston. The swing phase control device also has a first throttle for throttling discharge of a fluid from the first chamber and configured to be closed by a first device when a predetermined pressure is reached or exceeded within the first chamber; and a second throttle for throttling discharge of a fluid from the second chamber and configured to be closed by a second device when a predetermined pressure is reached or exceeded within the second chamber.
Abstract:
A prosthesis or orthosis (orthotic brace) comprises at least two parts (1, 2) connected to each other by means of an artificial joint (K), and a control device for the joint, to brake or lock the joint. The prosthesis or orthosis comprises a sensor (5) which detects the position in relation to a fixed line (L) of a part connected to the joint (K) and which is connected to a control device (4) arranged to influence the joint (K) on the basis of position data given by the sensor (5). The prosthesis or orthosis is a lower limb prosthesis, such as a thigh prosthesis or a hip ex-articulation prosthesis, or a lower limb orthosis. The sensor (5) is arranged to detect the position of the thigh part (1) in relation to a vertical line (L). The control device (4) is arranged to influence the movement resistance properties of the joint (K) on the basis of data given by the sensor (5). The sensor (5) is based on detecting the direction of earth's gravity.
Abstract:
A prosthetic foot assembly includes an ankle member, a heel member pivotally connected to the ankle member, an elongate metatarsal-toe member having a rear portion underlying a forward portion of the heel member and projecting forwardly from the heel member. The metatarsal-toe member is pivotally connected to the heel member. A first compressible element is engaged between a portion of the ankle member and a portion of the heel member and a second compressible element having first and second substantially circular bearing surfaces engaged between a portion of the heel member and a portion of the metatarsal-toe member to resist upward pivotal movement of a forward end of the metatarsal-toe member relative to the heel member. A portion of the compressible element spaced apart from one of the bearing surfaces has a smaller diameter than the diameter of at least one of the first and second bearing surfaces. Also disclosed is a prosthetic foot assembly incorporating noise abatement features including surface treatments and modified compressible elements or pads.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a prosthesis comprising first and second prosthesis parts connected for mutual movement which are characterized by a locking element for locking respectively releasing the prosthesis parts relative to each other. The parts are preferably connected for mutual movement by an artificial joint comprising a first and a second joint part. The locking element is spring biased and co-acts in a locked position with a recess in one of the joint parts, whereby tilting of the locking element is bounded, and which in the released position is substantially freely tiltable. The prosthesis can be further provided with a pin for actively placing the locking element out of the active reach of the recess. One of the two prosthesis parts connected for mutual movement is formed with a cup so that the prosthesis can be fixed to the remaining part of an amputated extremity. Opposite the cup are a brace, a perforated band, a tape and an eye which are utilized for fixing the prosthesis part to a higher located part of the remaining part of the amputated extremity. The other of the two prosthesis parts is formed by a device for replacing at least a part of the amputated extremity and is preferably provided with damping material.
