    Abstract: A diagnostic analyzer includes a track, a light-blocking member, a motor, and an optical testing device. The track moves a reaction vessel held by the track. The light-blocking member is disposed adjacent to the track. The light-blocking member moves from a first position apart from the track to a second position closer to the track. When the light-blocking member is disposed in the first position a sample contained within the reaction vessel held by the track is exposed to light. When the light-blocking member is disposed in the second position the sample contained within the reaction vessel held by the track is blocked from exposure to the light. The motor moves the light-blocking member between the first and the second positions. The optical testing device is disposed adjacent to the track for optically testing the sample contained within the reaction vessel held by the track when the at least one light-blocking member is disposed in the second position.

    Abstract: An apparatus for measuring light in samples using a high intensity light source (12), is presented. The system utilizes bifurcated fiber bundle (26) to transmit light at the excitation and emission wavelength bands. It also uses a band-pass filter (36) for eliminating extraneous light, including that which corresponds to the excitation wavelength range, while permitting the emitted light to pass to a detector (41) for quantitation. The system employs a shutter (39) to shield the detector (41) while the laser light source is activated, and a controller to intermittently activate the laser light and close the shutter. The apparatus preferably includes lenses (16, 17, 37) for better illumination and read out conditions. The apparatus is employed in Luminescence Oxygen Channeling Immunoassays. The method has high sensitivity, accuracy and precision, and the apparatus is highly compact. Accordingly, the analyzer can perform assays in nanoliter to microliter sample volumes in standard microplates having at least 96, 384 or 1536 wells.

    Abstract: An instrument for quantitative analysis includes two shutters, one of which prevents light from being introduced into a black box housing a cell holder from the outside through a port in which a cell may be placed in and taken out the black box, and the other of which prevents light from impinging on a photomultiplier tube which is in communication with the black box. The shutters are controlled by a control unit so that one of the shutters opens when the other closes. The instrument also includes detectors which detect whether or not the cell holder and the cell are disposed at predetermined positions, respectively. The detectors output signals to the control unit. The control unit controls an automatic pipetting device to restrict a sample from being introduced into the cell when both the cell holder and the cell are not disposed at the predetermined position.

    Abstract: A sample holder and shutter assembly for photometers is disclosed in which a stationary sample chamber body is mounted in close proximity to a photosensitive device. A light path is provided from the sample chamber to the photosensitive device and shutter means is provided for selectively interrupting and opening the light path between the photosensitive device and the sample chamber without moving the sample chamber. Heat exchange means including a heat pump and a heat reservoir are provided for maintaining a desired temperature in the sample chamber. The sample chamber body is thermally connected to said heat pump and is preferably thermally isolated from the means mounting it. In one embodiment, the heat pump and heat reservoir are flexibly connected.
