    Abstract: A radio receiver (40) for receiving an RF signal comprises receiving circuitry (42) for receiving and demodulating the RF signal and a microcomputer (44) coupled to the receiving circuitry (42) for enabling and disabling the receiving circuitry (42) at predetermined times. The radio receiver (40) further comprises an expansion chip (68) coupled to and controlled by the microcomputer (44) for communicating therewith to further process the RF signal. Communication between the microcomputer (44) and the expansion chip (68) occurs at a first speed when the receiving circuitry (42) is enabled and at a second speed faster than the first speed when the receiving circuitry (42) is disabled.

    Abstract: The method comprises the steps of receiving message information from a message originator, determining whether the message originator wishes an acknowledge back signal in response to reception of the message information by the radio pager, flagging the message information as a flagged message requesting an acknowledge back signal upon reception if the message originator wishes an acknowledge back signal, and transmitting the flagged message to the combination radio telephone and radio pager. The method further comprises the steps of coupling to the combination radio telephone and radio pager via a radio telephone system, receiving the requested acknowledge back signal via the radio telephone system, and advising the message originator that the message was received. A combination radio paging receiver and radio telephone (40) includes: a receiver (214), a decoder (216), and a controller (220); a radiotelephone transmitter (240) and receiver (236) to be coupled with a radio telephone system (15); and a control logic device (230) connected to said controller (220), radiotelephone transmitter (240) and receiver (236).

    Abstract: A global communications system is described having terrestrial transmitters (1108) for transmitting coded message signals in each of a plurality of geographic areas (1102, 1104, 1106). The global communication system further includes at least one satellite transmitter (1114) for transmitting the coded messages signals in each of a plurality of global geographic areas. The coded message signals transmissions include channel identification codewords identifying the terrestrial channels and the satellite channel. The terrestrial channel is selected for operation when the channel identification codeword received matches a first predetermined channel identification codeword. The satellite channel is selected for operation when the channel identification codeword does not match a second predetermined channel identification codeword. The terrestrial channel is periodically reselected when the channel identification codeword received on the satellite channel matches the second predetermined channel identification codeword.

    Abstract: A cooperative paging system (10) and radio telephone system (15) combine to provide conventional delivery of short paging messages to a combination pager/radio telephone (40) via a first communication path, while a radio telephone link operating at a higher data rate is used to deliver large data messages to the pager/radio telephone (40). The radio telephone link is formed by a transceiver section (205) of the pager/radio telephone (40) coupling to a radio telephone base station (50,52) and calling up a paging terminal (32) of the paging system (10). The paging terminal (32) retrieves the large data messages from a temporary message memory (42) to deliver to the pager/radio telephone (40).

    Abstract: A satellite paging system is described for providing geogrpahic protocol conversion for data packet delivery to communication receivers located in a plurality of geographic areas. The system includes a transmitter for transmitting data packets formatted in a first predetermined data format to the communication satellite. The satellite includes a receiver for receiving the data packets and a programmable encoder coupled to the receiver for encoding the received data packets into encoded data packets in a second predetermined data format corresponding to the signaling requirements of each geographic delivery area. A satellite transmitter coupled to the programmable encoder then transmits the encoded data packets in the second predetermined data format to a portable communication receiver, operable in the second predetermined data format in the geographic delivery area.
