Abstract:
Disclosed is a system and method for receiving satellite television signals. A centralized system component may be provided in association with the satellite antenna. The centralized system component includes at least one or more tuners and one or more demodulators. The centralized component may provide output through a network adaptor that provides output through a single output, which is a coaxial cable in one embodiment. The centralized component may send output in the form of packetized data directed to one or more set-top boxes by way of a network transaction. The set-top box or boxes may be operable to receive the network transaction and to process the data, as appropriate, for display on a TV/monitor.
Abstract:
One embodiment may take the form of a method for routing a signal to a target device. The method may include a control device that may transmit a signal on a first network. The signal may reach devices other than the target device. The devices that receive the signal may recognize that the signal is intended for another device and may transmit the signal on a second network. The signal may be received by the target device via the second network.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a system and method for managing the display of a targeted advertisement. In one embodiment an advancing functionality is inhibited or modified in connection with the display of a stored video or other stored content. In inhibiting or modifying an advancing function a user is forced or otherwise encouraged to watch a directed advertisement. The present invention may include status or indicator information which enables the particular functionality in connection with the targeted advertisement.
Abstract:
One embodiment may take the form of an apparatus for providing separate user classifications and interfaces to multiple users of a set-top box of the television system. Each user classification may be configurable to provide different interfaces, menus and available features to the users of the set-top box. Further, each user classification may include several sub-classifications to further personalize the set-top box to the various users of the system. Also, each user classification may also monitor the habits and usage of each class and store such information for use by the set-top box to suggest settings of the set-top box that the user may be interested in, such as a favorite channel list.
Abstract:
The various embodiments described herein provide methods and apparatus for providing multiple channel recall on a television receiver. A television receiver stores multiple previously viewed channels for selective recall by a user. A television receiver outputs a selection menu that includes a plurality of previously viewed channels. A user selects one of the channels from the selection menu for viewing, and a tuner of the television receiver is commanded to output the selected channel.
Abstract:
One embodiment of the present disclosure may take the form of protected or safeguard memory, such as a nonvolatile memory device. In operation, the nonvolatile memory device may not perform a command operation, such as a read operation, on locked password-protected sectors of a primary memory array. Once a password is provided to the nonvolatile memory device (for example, from or via an associated electronic device), the nonvolatile memory device may unlock the password-protected sectors.
Abstract:
Various embodiments of network performance assessment apparatus (200), systems and processes collect performance information pertaining to a current capacity utilization of a network (136), identify an occurrence of a capacity constraint on a portion of the network that is communicating the program to at least one presentation device (120), and modify at least one characteristic of the program and/or the communication thereof over the network so that a total capacity utilization of the network is less than a peak capacity of the network.
Abstract:
Systems, devices and automated processes detect piracy of broadcast television signals through selective delay of decrypted code words that are used to render satellite or other received television signals. Smart cards or similar access control hardware are programmed to selectively delay delivery of cryptographic code words based upon the identity of the receiver device. The delayed delivery of the code words produces intentional glitches in the content rendered by the receiver, thereby allowing viewers of the rendered content to ascertain the identity of the device.
Abstract:
Various arrangements relating to on-board autonomous device deactivation systems are presented. A status signal may be output to a transceiver and transmitted via a satellite antenna to a satellite. A timer may be executed that indicates a time duration that has elapsed since receiving a previous permissible operation message via the transceiver and the satellite antenna. The time duration may be compared with a stored deactivation time. Prior to the time duration reaching or exceeding the stored deactivation time, a permissible operation message indicative of the autonomous device being permitted to continue operation may or may not be received. In response to the receipt of such a permissible operation message, the time duration of the timer may be reset such that operation of the autonomous device is uninterrupted. If such a permissible operation message is not received, the autonomous device may be disabled.
Abstract:
Various embodiments of systems, apparatus, and methods are described for A user input device, such as a remote control device. In one implementation, the remote control device includes at least one pair of electrical contacts, at least one button configured to electrically connect the at least one pair of electrical contacts, and a degradation measurement module in electrical communication with at least one of the electrical contacts. The degradation measurement module is configured to determine a degradation level of the at least one button based on at least one electrical property of a circuit associated with the at least one button when the at least button electrically connects the at least one pair of electrical contacts.
