Abstract:
A smoke detector (14) employs a laser (36) and photodetectors (PS1 ... PS10) in a forward-scattering geometry to detect smoke in each of a plurality of sample flows. When a sample flow containing particles intersects a beam (40) from the laser (36), electromagnetic radiation is scattered. For each sample flow, a first photodetector (PS1, PS3, PS5, PS7 and PA9) detects light scattered at a first angle (82) and a second photodetector (PS2, PS4, PS6, PS8 and PS10) detects light scattered at a second angle (84). Detection of light at two different scattering angles allows the smoke detector (14) to discriminate between smoke and other particles such as dust.
Abstract:
A predetermined pattern of a dielectric polymer is formed on a substrate from either a first prepolymer which is the ether of the oligomeric condensation product of dihydric phenol and formaldehyde or a mixture of said oligomer with a second prepolymer which is the ether of the oligomeric condensation product of a dialdehyde and 3 to 4 moles of a phenol.
Abstract:
At temperatures above 200 DEG C, polyoxyalkylene glycol lubricants decompose to form water and other products. This is undesirable in refrigeration and air-conditioning systems because the presence of water causes corrosion of metallic parts in the system, freezes out and blocks expansion valves upon refrigerant cooling, and reacts with poly(ethylene terephthalate) films which insulate electric motor parts in hermetic systems so that eventually the film is destroyed and the water contacts the electric motor parts. The present invention provides a stabilized composition which substantially reduces the decomposition of polyoxyalkylene glycols. The stabilized polyoxyalkylene glycols comprise: (a) polyoxyalkylene glycol and (b) a composition comprising: (i) at least one component selected from the group consisting of phenol and trivalent phosphorus compound and (ii) at least one epoxide selected from the group consisting of aromatic epoxide and fluorinated alkyl epoxide.

The present invention provides refrigerant blends which are replacements for chlorodifluoromethane (HCFC-22). The present blends have refrigeration characteristics which are similar to HCFC-22. The blends comprise from about 10 to about 90 weight percent of a first component selected from the group consisting of 1,1,1-trifluoroethane, difluoromethane, propane, and mixture thereof; from about 1 to about 50 weight percent of a second component selected from the group consisting of hydrofluorocarbon having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, fluorocarbon having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, inorganic compound, and mixtures thereof having a boiling point at atmospheric pressure in the range from about -90 degrees C to less than -50 degrees C; and from about 1 to about 50 weight percent of a third component which is hydrofluorocarbon having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, other than 1,1,1-trifluoroethane, having a boiling point at atmospheric pressure in the range from about -50 degrees C to about -10 degrees C. The refrigerant compositions have a vapor pressure substantially equal to the vapor pressure of HCFC-22.

Abstract:
A digital video quantizer for use in TCAS and ATCRBS/SIF systems. A digital delay receives a digitized video signal and produces a plurality of delayed digital signals which are used throughout the quantizer. A threshold generator then produces a predetermined threshold and a dynamic threshold, and a quantized video generator compares one of the delayed digitized signals to a threshold to produce a quantized video signal. A slope quantizer detects a slope of the digitized signal which exceeds either a positive or negative threshold. In addition, a rise time detector detects an excessive rise time in the digitized video signal, and a chip amplitude comparator provides a signal which is used in detecting Mode S data bit values. The digital video quantizer's use of digital references rather than analog references, eliminates the inaccuracies caused by a reference voltage varying over time or temperature. The digital references also facilitate modification of the reference values at a later time.
Abstract:
A pendular piezoresistive accelerometer (100) for use in measuring acceleration in impact testing including a base structure (102) connected to a pendular seismic mass (110) by a hinged connection (118) for pivotal movement of the seismic mass (110) about an axis along a sense direction (114) orthogonal to the hinged connection (118) and a piezoresistive force sensor connecting the seismic mass to the base. The sensor comprises at least two piezoresistive gages (106, 108) which are etched-free from the substrate to form "beams" between the seismic mass and the base. The gages are placed above and below the hinged connection on the same side of the substrate so that the accelerations along the sensitive axis create compressive stresses on one gage and tensile stresses on the other. The gages are connected in a Wheatstone Bridge circuit for precise reading of the change in voltage due to acceleration. Each gage requires only small strain energy since its volume is very small. The accelerometer construction reduces the packaging costs by simplifying the wiring connection procedures. In accordance with the improved method of the present invention, the fabrication process for etching the accelerometer is improved since all components are sculptured from a single piece of silicon substrate in a single etching step.

Abstract:
A magnesium based metal matrix composite is made from rapidly solidified magnesium alloy powder and SiC particulate using liquid suspension coprocessing or mechanical alloying. The composite is suitable for consolidation into bulk shapes having, in combination, high strength, high stiffness, low density, low coefficient of thermal expansion, and high hardness. The composite is suited for uses in such applications as space and missile guidance and navigation and control system precision components where low density, very high specific stiffness and long term dimensional and environmental stability are principal performance criteria.
