Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A base station may identify a sounding reference signal (SRS) configuration for user equipment (UE). The base station may transmit an SRS grant message to a UE indicating the SRS configuration. An indication of SRS parameters may be included in the SRS grant message, and may include the SRS parameters or a location of the SRS parameters. That is, SRS parameters may be transmitted in a control channel with the SRS grant message or may be separately sent in a data channel as indicated by the indication of SRS parameters. In some cases, SRS parameters may be determined based on previously received UE feedback regarding channel conditions or power limitations. Alternatively, the base station may make its own environment measurements or assign SRS parameters autonomously. The UE may signal SRS transmissions to the base station according to the SRS grant message.

Abstract: One apparatus may be configured to detect a set of beams from a base station. The apparatus may be further configured to select a beam of the set of beams. The apparatus may be further configured to determine at least one resource based on the selected beam. The apparatus may be further configured to transmit, on the at least one determined resource, a beam adjustment request to the base station. The request may indicate an index associated with the selected beam. Another apparatus may be configured to transmit a first set of beams. The other apparatus may be further configured to receive a beam adjustment request on at least one resource. The other apparatus may be further configured to determine a beam index of a beam in the first set of beams based on the request and the at least one resource.

Abstract: When beamforming (e.g., via a millimeter wave system (mmW)) is used for wireless communication, a base station may transmit beams that are directed to certain directions. Due to the directional nature of the beams in the mmW system, an approach to determine a beam that provides a desirable gain is studied. The apparatus may be a user equipment (UE). The apparatus receives, from a base station, a plurality of signals through a plurality of beams of the base station, each of the plurality of beams corresponding to a respective antenna port of a plurality of antenna ports of the base station. The apparatus performs channel estimation for each beam of the plurality of beams from the plurality of antenna ports based on the plurality of signals. The apparatus transmits, to the base station, a feedback signal including information about one or more beams selected from the plurality of beams, the feedback signal further including one or more candidate uplink precoders.

Abstract: A RACH preamble is transmitted from a UE using multiple antenna ports. A UE splits a data stream containing a RACH preamble into multiple streams corresponding to a same number of antenna ports of the UE. The UE multiplexes the copies of the RACH preamble according to a multiplexing scheme that enables a receiving eNB to discern the different channels used to transmit the signal from the different antenna ports. A RACH procedure is further accomplished in two steps instead of four by the UE then splitting a RACH payload to the same number of streams and multiplexing the RACH payload for transmission to the eNB. The eNB receives both transmissions, and may use the RACH preamble as a reference signal, and responds with a combined message with control information, random access response, and contention resolution information.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. In some systems, a user equipment (UE) may perform a random access (RACH) procedure based on a selected synchronization signal block (SSB). During this RACH procedure, a base station may transmit physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) messages for UE RACH message handling. To receive PDCCH signaling for RACH Messages 2, 3, or 4 (Msg 2/3/4), the UE may identify a set of time resources used by the base station for transmitting SSBs that are not quasi-co-located (QCL) with the selected SSB. The UE may identify a Msg 2/3/4 search space that does not overlap with this identified set of resources, and may monitor this identified search space. The search space may correspond to a modified remaining minimum system information (RMSI) search space indicated by the base station, or a valid RMSI search space not indicated by the base station.

Abstract: In a mmW network, a UE and a base station may establish a link using a RACH procedure. Because mmW and other band communications may rely on accurate beamforming to overcome link attention, the UE may need to provide beam information feedback to the base station. In particular, the UE may receive a beam-formed message from the base station during the RACH procedure. The UE may determine beam information based on the received beam-formed message during the RACH procedure. The UE may transmit a message to the base station during the RACH procedure, and the message may include the determined beam information.

Generally, the described techniques provide a mechanism for a user equipment (UE) to identify an uplink transmit beam to be used for communicating with a base station. In some cases, the uplink transmit beam may be based on a recent uplink (or downlink) transmission or set of allocated resources. A base station may allocate communication resources for a UE. The UE may determine, based on the allocated communication resources, a default transmit beam for communicating with the base station. The UE and base station may (e.g., independently) identify a triggering condition for using the default transmit beam. The UE may transmit an uplink communication to the base station using the default transmit beam based on the triggering condition.
