SOLUTION: The rod type optical device arranged between a light source and an optical modulator is equipped with an end face A on which the light from the light source is made incident, and an end face F arranged oppositely to the optical modulator and having an emitting surface B at a position opposed to the optical modulator. The side surface r1 of the rod ranging with the end face A and the end face F and an area r2 other than the emitting surface (aperture part B) on the end face F are constituted as light reflection surfaces.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector which is compact, inexpensive and yet has high performance.
SOLUTION: The laser array 31 of the projector has, on the same substrate, a plurality of light emitting elements 31a the number of which is smaller than the number of pixels in subscanning direction, and thus the characteristics of each the light emitting elements 31a are easily uniformized compared with the case where a large number of light emitting elements corresponding to the pixels are provided, the laser array 31 is consequently made comparatively inexpensive. Further, a light addressing liquid crystal 20 is scanned with addressing light AB by the use of a scanning device 40 in the main scanning direction and the subscanning direction, and thus an arbitrary image is written in at high speed by the modulation of the addressing light AB and an image write-in part is miniaturized.
