Abstract:
Water-based coatings having writable-erasable surfaces are provided. The coatings have many desirable attributes. For example, the coatings cure under ambient conditions, have low or no VOC emissions during and upon curing, and have reduced tendency to form ghost images, even after prolonged normal use.

Abstract:
The invention relates to coatings having a contact angle hysteresis with water measured by the sessile drop method of at most 20°. The coatings can be produced from a mixture of at least two different stellate prepolymers and/or stellate prepolymer/nanoparticle complexes which may cross-link to each other and to the surface of the substrate coated, wherein the stellate prepolymers and/or stellate prepolymer/nanoparticle complex have at least three hydrophilic polymer branches before cross-linking which are themselves soluble in water with on all or a part of the free ends thereof, silyl end groups R1 of general formula (I): R1=—CRa2—Si(ORb)r(Rc)3-r, where Ra=H or straight or branched chain 1-6C alkyl, ORb=a hydrolysable group, Rc=linear or branched chain 1-6C alkyl and r=a number from 1 to 3 and the optionally non silyl end group carrying ends have reactive end groups which a reactive with each other, with the substrate to be coated optional entities included in the coating and/or with the silyl end groups with the proviso the mixture (a) has at least one stellate prepolymer with 3-5 hydrophilic polymer branches and (b) at least one stellate prepolymer and/or a stellate prepolymer/nanoparticle complex with a least 6 hydrophilic polymer branches. The invention further relates to a method for production for said coatings and stellate prepolymers as used in the coatings. The invention furthermore relates to the use of the stellate prepolymers as additives in various materials for temporary or permanent anti-soiling treatment of surfaces.

Abstract:
The invention relates to aqueous dispersions and aqueous electrodepositable primers made with the aqueous dispersions of the invention. The aqueous dispersion of the invention requires the use of a polymer (a) comprising one or more water dispersible groups per molecule and one or more functional groups (f), and at least one crosslinking agent (b) comprising one or more blocked functional groups (fb) reactive with polymer (a) after unblocking. Crosslinking agent (b) has a Tg of from 40 to 70° C./105 to 158° F. and is a solid at 23.9° C./75° F. when at 100% by weight solids. Crosslinking agent (b) is melt mixed into acrylic polymer (a) to provide a first dispersion and said first dispersion is emulsified in water to provide an aqueous dispersion. In a preferred embodiment, the aqueous electrodepositable primers comprise at least 50% by weight water and an acrylic polymer (a) having one or more salted sites per molecule.
Abstract:
Polymers, and particularly conventional commodity bulk polymers, are modified to have a surface activity of interest using a surface modifying polymer that includes a moiety that favors migration to the surface of the bulk polymer together with a moiety provides the activity of interest (e.g., biocidal, wettability modifying (hydrophobic or hydrophilic), resistance to radiant energy, providing a functional group for functionalizing the surface, etc.). The surface modifying polymer is combined with the bulk polymer, and, due to the presence of the moiety that favors migration, concentrates primarily on the surface of the bulk polymer such that the moiety that provides the activity of interest is located primarily on the surface of the bulk polymeric article which is produced. Advantageously, only a minimal amount (such as, e.g., about 2 weight %) of polymeric surface modifier is needed. Being able to achieve desired properties (such as biocidal activity, wettability modification, etc.) without needing much polymeric surface modifier is highly advantageous.
Abstract:
The invention discloses a method for determining the air content of the brake fluid in a hydraulic braking system. This method also permits determining the quality of the bleeding of the braking system. The principle of the method is a comparison of the volume intake with the respectively achieved pressure. The correlation is compared to nominal values. As the volume intake is determined by the clearance, the system is set by means of a pre-actuation to an initial condition before each actual measurement.
Abstract:
A copolymer composition that includes a copolymer comprised of at least 30 mol % of residues having the following alternating residues from a donor monomer and from an acceptor monomer. The copolymer contains at least 15 mol % of an isobutylene type donor monomer and at least 15 mol % of an acrylic monomer as an acceptor monomer. The copolymer is substantially free of maleate or fumarate monomer segments and the copolymer composition is substantially free of Lewis acids and transition metals.
