    Abstract: A process for producing dimethyl ether (DME) from CO and H2, and possibly also CO2, is disclosed in which the gaseous reactants are reacted in the presence of a catalytic composition constituted overall by a mixture of: (a) crystalline silica in which some silicon atoms in the crystal lattice have been replaced by aluminium, and which corresponds to the general formula: Si1Al (0.0012 &cirf& 0.0052)Oy where y varies between 2.0018 and 2.0075; and (b) a mixture of Cu/Zn/Cr and/or Cu/Zn/Al oxides and/or salts; the Al can also be present together with the Cr. Good yields of DME can be achieved at temperatures lower than those normally associated with the dehydration of methyl alcohol to produce DME.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the isothermal absorption of the ethylene oxide contained in the gas from an ethylene oxide production plant. This process is characterized in that the gas is firstly cooled to a temperature of between 5 DEG and 60 DEG C., and is then fed at a pressure which can vary from 1 to 30 atm. to a water-fed isothermal film absorber, from the bottom of which is obtained a high concentration ethylene oxide solution which can be fed directly to a glycol production plant after recovering the ethylene still in solution. By using this process, the absorption plant is simplified compared with known processes, and steam, electricity and cooling water consumption are considerably reduced.

    Abstract: A method is disclosed for the microbiological transformation of steroids, especially cholesterol, by employing culture media which contain hydrocarbons rather than carbohydrates. Paraffinic hydrocarbons, particularly normal paraffins from 15 to 20 carbon atoms, are used as the only carbon and energy sources. SP2T (NRRL B-11, 112), SP3T bis (NRRL B-11, 113), SP5T (NRRL B-11, 114), SP7T/1 (NRRL B-11, 115), SP742XXA (NRRL B-11, 116), SP731RD (NRRL B-11, 117), and SP734D (NRRL B-11, 118) are bacterial strains which can be used to this purpose.
